Vice President, Health, Safety and Training – Canada

As our Vice President of Health, Safety and Training, you’ll set the vision for safety, training, and compliance across our busing operations in Canada, ensuring every passenger arrives safely and every employee is supported to do their best work.

Student Transportation of America (STA) is looking for an experienced safety professional to become our next safety leader. Reporting directly to the President, Student Transportation, this role will be responsible for coordinating and managing all areas of health, safety, risk management, driver training and compliance across STA’s Canadian operations (6 provinces and 1 territory).

This is a very hands-on position that requires a high degree of flexibility to manage the different functional areas. Regular travel throughout Canada is required.

The successful candidate could be based in the Greater Toronto Area, Edmonton or Calgary.

Duties/Responsibilities

• Monitor the safe operation of over 5,000 buses across two service lines throughout STA’s Canadian operations
• Manage a team of Safety and Training employees
• Analyze training to employees to reduce the risk of accidents and claims
• Lead and support the company’s Leadership Safety Council
• Organize the start-up of the new locations by ensuring that employee health and safety activities are staged
• Ensure activities of the department are compliant with current laws and regulations
• Ensure compliance with all Occupational Health and Safety regulations (OHS, AODA, MTO, MOH, ESA, HRC, NSC)
• Act as representative in proposing solutions to reduce accident costs
• Ensure the implementation of health, safety and environmental programs, policies and procedures that adhere to corporate specifications to sustain and support a culture of safety, reducing incidents, and maintaining operational productivity
• Work in partnership with leaders to promote a safety culture
• Develop health and safety goals for the company ensuring they meet all fiscal, strategic, and legislative requirements
• Develop annual operating, planning and corporate governance processes, including audits, compliance initiatives, government reporting, and identification of best practice initiatives
• Establish key metrics that drive the effectiveness of the Health and Safety program across Canada
• Oversee activities throughout STA’s Canadian operations to ensure their continued effectiveness in the overall safety program
• Continual communication of health and safety information to all levels within the company through memos, meetings, e-mail/text correspondence, social media etc.
• Responsible for company’s overall COR compliance
• In partnership with Operations, conduct regular audits for all divisions throughout the year to ensure they are compliant with regulatory and corporate requirements
• Ensure incident and collision reporting is complete and reported in a timely fashion; establishes appropriate follow-up
• Accountable for and oversee workplace injury management, including development of return-to-work plans and appeals
• Serve as internal subject matter expert and resource on all areas of safety and compliance, including regulation and best-practices
• Set the direction for the entire department, providing guidance and mentorship to the team, and taking responsibility for overall performance
• Continually assess the safety knowledge within the various levels of the company, and making recommendations for training to address those gaps
• Help increase STA’s visibility within the community by participating in company sponsored events

Required Education, Skills And Experience

• Completion of University or College education, Diploma or Degree in Occupational Health and Safety or equivalent
• CRSP designation preferred
• In-depth knowledge of current legislation relating to Health & Safety in Canada
• Minimum of 10 years of experience in a similar role, preferably in the Transportation industry
• Experience in the school bus industry an asset
• Familiarity with the transportation industry required
• Strong background in root cause analysis
• Computer proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
• Exceptional analytical problem solving and organizational abilities
• Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
• Confidential and professional conduct as well as a mature & diplomatic manner
• Must have or be able to upgrade to a commercial driver’s license
• Must be willing to work a flexible schedule including travel throughout Canada on a regular basis
