Position Overview

Zone 126 is seeking to hire a part-time Teaching Artist to develop and implement therapeutic activities for at-risk youth. This position plays a critical role in the success of the workshops and takes on a variety of roles within them including facilitator, actor, mentor, coach, and teacher. The successful candidate should have demonstrated experience in multiple theatre arts disciplines and be passionate about teaching middle school and/or high school youth in a public-school setting. They should have experience in creating a safe learning environment to foster pro-social development, modeling positive behavior, and supporting the accomplishment of participants, no matter how large or small.

The Teaching Artist s to the Licensed Creative Arts Therapist, while working closely with school administration and the Zone 126 staff in providing creative therapeutic services.

Essential Responsibilities

• Create lessons to support social and emotional development through theatre arts instruction.
• Guide after-school students to create a full-scale culminating presentation based on acting, singing and acquired social
• and emotional skills, under the direction of the Licensed Creative Arts Therapist/
• Encourage students to “find their voice” and reflect on what they learned at each workshop.
• Plan and establish a safe learning environment for all participants.
• Participate in pre- and post-planning meetings with others.
• Document workshop agendas, successes, and challenges for each session.
• Identify students in need of counseling and communicate their needs to the proper Zone 126 school based staff.
• Commit to on-going personal professional development both as an arts practitioner and as an educator.
• Submit required attendance, sign-in sheets, and other documents promptly by deadlines.
• Be a positive role model to students, parents, school staff and fellow teaching artists.

Qualifications

• Must have at least a Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
• At least 3-5 years of work experience in a similar role.
• Highly skilled in all or most of the following theatre arts disciplines; acting, improvisation, playwriting, movement, vocal production, directing and technical theatre production.
• Work well with people in various communities, institutional and governmental organizations.
• Cultural competency to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
• Foster open communication within and among diverse groups.
• Experience in areas such as organization, team building and group dynamics.
• Ability to work independently, be flexible, and manage multiple priorities.
• Work well in a team-oriented environment with minimal supervision and maintain harmonious relationships.
• Detail-oriented with excellent communication, organizational, interpersonal, and writing skills.
• Experience with public speaking and presentations.
• Strong commitment to social change through community empowerment and the arts.
• Collect and maintain comprehensive, up-to-date, and accurate records for submission to our Data & Evaluation Manager for input into our CRM system (Apricot).
• Properly maintain confidential students’ files with complete and up to date data/documentation, including required consent forms.
• Support the promotion and collection of surveys, interviews, and focus groups as requested.
• Ensure the distribution and completion of DCFs, after school applications, and other documents as required.
• Experience or interest in drama therapy education is a plus.
• Support with other duties as needed.

Work Location and Schedule

• Part-time, 15-20 hours per week (2 days per week).
• Evenings, weekends, and special event support may be needed and will be planned ahead of time.
• School-based role at either IS 126Q (31-51 21st St., Long Island City, NY 11106) or Long Island City High School (14-30 Broadway, Long Island City, NY 11106)

Job Description Salary And Benefits

Annual Salary: $50,000
