The Wildland Fire Management (WFM) branch contributes to protection of people and property and the development of sustainable, fire-resilient Yukon communities and infrastructure. Reporting to the Regional Protection Officer, the Crew Leader is responsible for supervising, training and motivating a fire crew, leading them in regional projects, fuel reduction work and in response to rapid initial attack and sustained action operations on wildfires and other emergency situations across the Yukon.

Essential Qualifications

Secondary (high) school diploma or equivalency certificate;

3 seasons working on a wildfire suppression crew; and

Experience in a fire-line leadership capacity.

Certification at the Crew Leader level may be considered an asset.

Certification as a Wildland Fire Management faller or equivalent may be considered an asset.

Certification as Incident Commander 5 or greater may be considered an asset.

Preference may be given to candidates with experience instructing and delivering training

Candidates with certification(s) and experience equivalent to the above may be equally considered.

Candidates should have and may be assessed on:
Ability to lead, motivate and effectively supervise a team

Ability to work in a team environment

Strong interpersonal and conflict resolution skills

Strong organizational skills and high level of attention to detail

Ability to work independently to accomplish goals or tasks

Ability to work in a high-stress environment with multiple interruptions and critical deadlines

Thorough understanding of OH&S protocols and safety procedures

Knowledge of computer software(s) including Word, Excel and Microsoft Outlook

Additional Information

Conditions of Employment:
Pass and maintain Medical Clearance (PARQ/PAR-MEDX for returning personnel) Must be obtained within the first week of employment

Valid Yukon Class 5 Driver’s Licence (or equivalent)

Job Requirements:
Valid Standard First Aid with CPR “C” certification (wilderness first aid with CPR “C” also acceptable) – Recertification will be provided by the employer

Transportation Dangerous Goods (TDG) Air & Ground Certificate – Must be obtained within first two weeks of employment

Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) certificate – Must be obtained within first two weeks of employment

Restricted Operator Certificate with Aeronautical Qualification (ROC-A) -Must be obtained within first two weeks of employment

Pass and maintain the WFX-Fit test for Type 1 Wildfire Fire Fighter* Eligible for Export WFX—FIT time 14:30 – Must be obtained within first week of employment

Working and living in remote locations under rudimentary conditions for extended periods of time

Travelling in helicopters and small fixed wing aircrafts

Must be available with limited notice according to the standby schedule during the fire season for emergency response
