About Young Man with a Plan
Young Man with a Plan (YMWAP), launched in 2015, creates a new culture of brotherhood, respect, aspiration and achievement for 200 at-risk Black and Latino male teens and young adults in Boston. Many young Black and Latino men lack confidence in their abilities and where they fit in the world. Through four years of mentoring and success planning, we focus on making both academic and social emotional progress, and help young men build the fortitude and imagination to overcome significant obstacles and access sustainable futures. Our four-year mentoring program is unique in some impactful ways. YMWAP:

• Serves a cross sector of 8 Boston district & charter schools, forming a brotherhood and bridging understanding across sectors, schools, cultures and neighborhoods
• Recruits young men “in the middle” and help them grow their academic, social-emotional and financial literacy skills.
• Helps students understand college and career options and develop a post-secondary Success Plan and offers young men the opportunity to meet and learn from successful men through Men of Color Career Night, guest educators, and other enrichment. We partner with the Boston PIC, Bottom Line, Ben Franklin Institute, Year Up and BPD.

• Creates a brotherhood of male of color educators–mentors in each participating school and YMWAP’s two African American directors–who support students and model success
• Provides deep support in a powerful combination of popular weekly afterschool groups & in-school mentoring, sustained throughout 9th – 12th grades (with 90% retention)
• Invites alumni back to support success plans and serve as “apprentice mentors”

Weekly Meetings: Each week young men in the program meet in their respective schools with their mentor, and as a group in our Hyde Park office, for a total of over 2 hours of weekly mentoring. In the safe haven of their group meetings, led by program leaders and a team of mentors, young men check in, share dinner, and discuss topics like current events, healthy break-ups, neighborhood violence, stock trading, mental health, growth mindset, credit scores, college & career options, AP courses, and stress. Over four years, through our words and actions, young men learn: “You matter.” “Your dreams matter.” “You can aim higher.” “You can work harder.” “You can be yourself.”

The Job

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Educator/Youth Mentor is culturally-sensitive, purpose-driven professional who possesses an unwavering belief in young people’s capacity to grow and achieve. They join a dedicated collaborative team at a time of program growth.

Job Functions
The Educator/Youth Mentor directly delivers holistic mentoring to program participants. They:

• Plans, coordinates, and delivers programming during the school year and summer, including 1:1 and group mentoring; leadership development and career exploration; and enriching experiences such as field and wilderness trips, and community service.
• Works with young men, in groups that meet weekly, to build a supportive and motivated peer group. He is trained on and implements the Rites of Passage mentoring model and curriculum. He develops and delivers curriculum based on his skills and interests.
• Helps each young man develop and maintain a Success Plan and establish short and long- term goals, working as a coach and advocate to promote an awareness of the diversity of career choices and helping young men identify opportunities to cultivate skills needed to pursue their dreams.
• Engages, individually and as a group, with school-based mentors from the participating schools to collaborate on the delivery of academic monitoring, mentoring, and programming that supports young mans in their growth and pursuit of their goals.
• Initiates, develops and maintains collaborations with community organizations (e.g. college and career access organizations, colleges, worksites, schools, other youth groups) to deliver supplemental programming and mentoring.
• Engages parents and other community individuals to help young men achieve goals
• Supports the Director of Program Operations in operational duties related to program management

Work Location, Hours and Supervision

• The Educator/Youth Mentor is located at the Young Man with a Plan office in Hyde Park, and receives ongoing supervision from the Executive Director, Young Man with a Plan.
• Work is performed both after-school and during school hours at the 8 individual schools whose students engage in Young Man with a Plan. Hours are built around the needs of program participants during the school year and the summer. Work will include a percentage (~15%) of night and/or weekend hours. Travel within Boston is required; some out of state travel for professional development may be involved.

Expected Outcomes
Program success will be measured in part, but not limited to, strong results in young mans’ attendance and GPA, retention in program and school, reported and observed growth in socio- emotional areas that include confidence, relationships, persistence, and goal-orientation; and post-secondary outcomes.

• Skill and positive energy to form meaningful connections and mentor young men
• Ability to inspire and help young men articulate a positive vision for the future
• Comfortable and effective leading the recruiting and start-up of a new group
• Excellent interpersonal and communications skills for interactions with program participants, school leaders, school-based mentors, families, and community partners
• A firm belief in the capacity for youth development and growth
• Strong project planning and management skills, and administrative ability to maintain appropriate documentation, oversee budget, and ensure evaluation data is collected
• Patience, flexibility, and a sense of humor
• Experience and competency in working in a multiracial, multicultural environment

• Ability to work effectively independently and as a group member
• Growth mindset and committed to professional and personal development
• BA/BS and 3 years experience working in education or youth development

Salary and benefits are competitive, including an educational/student loan stipend and a salary range $65,000 to $75,000.
