Yakima Valley College seeks an innovative and collaborative Director of Teacher Education, who is committed to students and their success. This is a full-time, administrative position, which includes a full state benefits package.
Reporting to the Dean – Workforce Education, the Director of Teacher Education provides administrative leadership for the Bachelor of Applied (BAS) Teacher Education Program. As a team member of the Education and Early Childhood Education Department, this position leads the implementation of policies and procedures designed to ensure compliance with federal, state, and college teacher certification requirements. This individual will demonstrate dedication to excellence in leadership and a strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusiveness.
The Director will collaborate across departments offering courses in support of teacher education programs, coordinating curriculum, assessment, strategic planning, and external initiative activities for teacher certification programs. This position also supports the Dean of Workforce Education with policy/procedure management, program planning, accreditation, faculty/staff development, curriculum delivery, planning for facilities and equipment, departmental operations, grant management, community engagement, and responsiveness to students.
Essential Tasks
Leadership:
Responsible for the oversight of the Professional Educators Standards Board (PESB) Program Review and maintenance of all evidence, data, and information for the annual data submissions required per WAC 181-78A- 255(2)Provide effective leadership to the program through active collaboration with the Dean of Workforce Education, the Director of Applied Baccalaureate Degree Programs, and instructional program department heads
Apply appropriate and effective techniques to encourage community and parent involvement.
Ensure program assessment occurs and use data and research to guide best practices in teacher education.
Provide leadership and coordination of the Teacher Education Professional Education Advisory Board (PEAB).
Represent and advocate for Yakima Valley College education programs in the community (i.e., active involvement with the Early Childhood Teacher Preparation Council, Early Learning Coalition, WACTE, etc.)
Responsible for creating and maintaining school district partnership agreements, guiding faculty in curriculum development according to program and PESB accreditation, creating an annual and quarterly schedule, staff development, grant management, enrollment management, and PESB accreditation
Communicate and provide leadership on the alignment of curriculum
Lead a collaboratively developed approved preparation program that is based on a conceptual framework, current research, and best practice that reflects the State’s learning goals and essential academic learning requirements
Coordinate with state agencies that guide teacher education and BAS programs
Manage and facilitate residency placements and grow and maintain relationships with K-12 partners
Review and recommend mentor teachers for hire, train and orient mentor teachers to mentor responsibilities
Supervise program staff
Create program teaching schedules for Dean approval
Adhere to the provisions of (a) college policies and procedures, (b) state administrative code, (c) the standards of NWCCU, and (d) the standards of all accrediting/approval agencies for teacher certification in Washington State
Manage and coordinate Professional Education Advisory Board (PESB) in compliance with the provisions of WAC 181-78A-250 for the development, implementation, and revision of teacher preparation programs
Seek out and develop opportunities for partnership for service-learning via practicums, field experiences, and residencies
Requires some evening and weekend hours to accommodate BAS schedules
Requires travel within the college district and Washington State
As assigned by the Dean, teach at least one course in the program per academic year
Collaboration:
Manage designated BASTE budgets and grants
Work collaboratively and interdisciplinary as a member of the Education Department
Work with faculty and administration to seek external funding opportunities
Communicate department/program needs to the Dean of Workforce Education in a timely fashion
Work with the Dean of Workforce Education, in the development of the annual department budget
Provide training and support to program staff
Identify and facilitate professional development opportunities for YVC education faculty and staff
with the BAS Director, the program website, and marketing materials and recommend appropriate updates Collaborate
Track national trends in teacher preparation program development and develop recommendations for the program
Perform other duties assigned
Qualifications
KNOWLEDGE OF:
Knowledge of current literature, trends, and developments in the education field
Teacher preparation programs at the university level
PESB and OSPI Teacher Preparation program requirements
Adult learning best practices and theory
Diversity, equity, and inclusion principles, and application in higher education
Elementary and/or ELL Bilingual Education content
ABILITY TO:
Communicate effectively both oral and written; research, develop, present, and promote projects; work independently; prioritize work and meet deadlines
Follow oral and written instructions, implementing priorities identified by the dean and the vice president
Adhere to and implement policy and procedures
Analyze and interpret data
Develop and implement long term goals and objectives
Demonstrate strong communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills
Evaluate the effectiveness of programs and make recommendations for improvements
Provide leadership and supervise the planning, development of certification programs
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Master’s in Education, Elementary Education, Early Childhood Education or related field from a regionally accredited college or university
Five years experience as a certified classroom teacher
Two years experience in higher education and/or teacher certification programs
Demonstrated supervisory experience
Must possess a valid driver’s license to travel to early learning programs and local school districts
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Doctorate in Education or related field from a regionally accredited institution
Experience in community college education/higher education and administration
Demonstrated experience in program development and implementation of teacher certification programs
Demonstrated leadership capabilities in the field of multicultural education, and/ or diversity, social justice, or equity
Experience as an administrator in an educational setting
Experience managing financial resources in an institutional environment
Experience working with disadvantaged, at-risk, and multi-cultural populations
Demonstrated expertise in curriculum and instruction
Proficient in MS Office Suite Programs
