“Looking to fill an immediate position within our telecoms design team for an experienced CAD technician. Ideally the candidate needs to be used to carrying civil / structural type detailing (concrete / steel)  and working on everything from planning drawings through to detailed design drawings. Experience in the telecoms sector would be beneficial but not essential. What’s most important is good time-management skills to hit tight deadlines, good understanding of civil / structural design which can be transposed to the telecoms design space and flexibility as telecoms design specs literally change by the week”

Roles & Responsibilities:
As a provider of design services to the mobile telecommunications industry, our client is currently looking to expand their design team in line with the current volume of ongoing telecoms projects. We are currently offering a position for a CAD technician with a minimum of 3 years professional CAD experience who has been used to producing General arrangement drawings through to Detailed design drawings typically involving concrete and steelwork detailing. Any previous experience in working with electrical / detailed schematics would be beneficial also.
Full training on mobile telecoms design across all operator networks will be provided to afford the candidate with the necessary skills to be able to contribute to our ongoing telecoms projects.
The successful applicant will predominantly spend their time producing detailed drawings as well as completing general arrangement drawings, redline amendments with the option of attending the occasional site survey. The applicant would form part of a very busy but highly motivated team where deadlines can be very tight and each individual is expected to have good self-organizational skills, be adaptable and have excellent communication skills. Attention to detail is imperative and also the ability to be able to constantly adapt to changes in new specifications which happens on a regular basis.

Progression Opportunities:
The telecoms design team offers areas for development from the CAD Technician role to Project Co-ordination, mentoring other junior members of the team and scope to undertake Site Surveying (including mast climbing). We also have areas of the business in the traditional Structural Engineering sector, Geotechnical Engineering and Ground Engineering which would also be available for areas of further development

How big is this team?:
The telecoms team has an overall telecoms manager, Design project co-ordinator, Survey co-ordinator, 5 CAD Technicians, Structural design engineer, Electrical design engineer and admin support

What is a typical project?:
Typical projects will involve producing Planning general arrangement drawings for proposed mobile telecoms installations and also produce detailed design drawings which will involve producing detailed equipment and electrical schematics as well completing steelwork, concrete and general civil / structural engineering elements within the drawings. Deadlines are extremely tight in telecoms so a clear understanding of the work being undertaken and expected due dates are imperative

What does a typical day look like?:
The CAD techs work to a weekly programme of sites which will be on a variety of different client projects. A briefing meeting is held daily with the telecoms manager and also support meetings throughout the day to ensure client timescales are met

Experience required:
⦁ Min 2-3 years working on Autocad expected and a knowledge of detailing essential. Preferable if has experience in the telecoms industry.
⦁ Antenna’s, satellite dishes, 5g requirements on size and how antennas are placed – go out and understand requirements of radio designers
⦁ Develop steelwork structures that hold them in place
⦁ CAD- plan drawings, design, e.g. concrete and steelwork detailing
⦁ Decide if right antenna, cabling
⦁ Infrastructure complicated with 5g
⦁ Steelwork supports and e.g. want 6 metres above roof level
⦁ If someone with telecoms exp- needs to be recent as the industry moves so quickly
⦁ Telecoms can train industry experience not vital- need Autocad and detailing experience minimum then comes down to right personality fit
⦁ Could be structural concrete and steel
