About Women’s Audio Mission: Women’s Audio Mission (WAM), is a San Francisco-based nonprofit dedicated to the advancement of women and gender-expansive individuals in music technology and digital media production, a field in which these individuals are critically underrepresented (less than 5%). WAM uses music and media to attract 4,000+ women/girls/ gender-expansive individuals a year to creative technology studies/careers, and believes that women/gender-expansive individual’s participation in creative technology will expand the voice of music and media, ensuring that women/gender-expansive individuals’s views and ideas are conveyed in popular culture. Founded in 2003, WAM has grown exponentially to serve 50+ school partners across three school districts and includes two recording studios we own in San Francisco, an educational lab space in Oakland, and global reach online to 30+ countries. WAM’s staff consists of teaching artists, audio professionals, and passionate, hard working individuals in a combination of full time, part time, and contract roles.

Position Summary: Reporting to the Executive Director (ED), the Director of Education will provide educational and administrative oversight of WAM’s education programs, for youth and adults. This includes the Girls on the Mic program that serves girls ages 11-18 as well as Core Adult Classes, and support for WAM’s professional conferences: WAMCon. The Director of Education’s responsibilities will include:
· curriculum development and oversight
· evaluation development and oversight collection/analysis
· supervision and evaluation of all program instructors
· partner outreach and coordination
· event development and management
· ensuring continuity from youth through adult and professional development programs, and
· some class instruction
The Director of Education is a member of the Senior Management Team. The ideal candidate has 3-5 years of relevant educational experience, including teaching experience either with youth, adults, or in higher education, program and staff management, and training in audio technology. The successful applicant will be someone who is passionate about WAM’s mission of advancing women, girls and gender-diverse individuals in the fields of music, media and technology through our award-winning training programs.
About WAM Education Programs:
Girls on the Mic is a groundbreaking after-school program that provides 2,000+ San Francisco Bay Area girls (96% low income, 92% girls of color, ages 11-18) from under-resourced communities per year with free, hands-on music production and media arts training in a professional studio environment and through our 50+ school partners. The Girls on the Mic curriculum is rooted in the National Core Media Arts and California Performing Arts Standards and amplifies the voices and creativity of girls and gender-diverse youth.
WAM Core Adult Classes provide rigorous, hands-on certification training in professional audio and the recording arts, led by award-winning women instructors in WAM’s world class recording studios. WAM Core classes serve 500+ San Francisco Bay Area women and gender-diverse adults per year and include Introduction to Audio Production and Recording, Professional Studio Recording, Live Sound, Pro Tools, Electronic Music Production, Podcasting, Intro to Max, Intro to Acoustics, Intro to Mastering, Synth Building, Classical Recording, and more.
WAMCon are WAM’s interactive recording conferences for women and gender-diverse individuals featuring top leaders in the industry, including GRAMMY award-winning music producers, recording engineers, songwriters, beatmakers, and record executives involved in making the music we all love. Workshops and discussions cover topics like recording techniques, mixing, mastering, vocal production, songwriting (including demo feedback), beatmaking, the music business, music licensing, and more. Sound for Picture conferences feature Oscar and Emmy-winning post-production sound professionals for animation, film, TV, and games and cover topics like sound design, production sound, dialog and music editing, and re-recording mixing.
Primary Objectives and Responsibilities:
Program Management (85%)
· Provide educational leadership, mentoring and instructional support to staff and contract instructors (currently 6 staff youth instructors and 4 contract instructors).
· Schedule and coordinate all Girls on the Mic, Core Adult classes, and WAMCon, including securing and recruiting appropriate instructors and interns to serve as teaching assistants, as well as speakers and panelists.
· Oversee WAM instructional staff, intern program manager and contract instructors, including scheduling, coordination, and evaluation.
· Conduct Girls on the Mic and WAM Core Adult program evaluations as appropriate, including soliciting survey responses from students and working with instructors to analyze and shift curriculum/teaching to improve outcomes.
· Manage outreach and maintain strong relationships with Girls on the Mic school partners
· Ensure compliance with important outcomes/evaluation for program grants, including necessary attendance monitoring, record-keeping, and form collection by instructors within related reporting systems online.
· Develop and maintain lesson plans and train instructors to deliver the curriculum for the Girls on the Mic program.
· Provide some instruction as needed for Girls on the Mic classes. Classes take place in San Francisco and Oakland and some local travel is required between WAM’s two studios and school partner sites in each location.
Conference Design and Planning (10%)
· Collaborate with Executive Director and other staff on overall WAMCon conference design and planning for the maximum professional development experience of attendees, including issuing invitations to guest speakers, shaping workshops and panels, identifying target partners and sponsors, and more.
Nonprofit Administration and Events (5%)
· Provide coordination and production support for events on and offsite as needed, including donor events, member meetings, conferences, performances, studio events, and others.
· Assist as necessary with nonprofit administrative tasks associated with the day-to-day functioning of the organization.
Qualifications:
· 3-5 years of instructional experience in a classroom setting, with youth, adults, or in higher education. Significant experience creating course syllabi, lesson plans, etc.
· 3-5 years of educational program management experience including instructor management and evaluation experience
· Educational background and/or equivalent experience in audio technology
· Experience creating and implementing program evaluation methods, learning outcomes, etc.
· Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required
· Self-starter
· Strong organizational skills
· Exceptional attention to detail
· Excellent verbal and written communication skills
· Some non-profit experience strongly preferred
Location: This position is located in Oakland and San Francisco, with regular travel throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, Oakland, and the South Bay with occasional travel nationally.
Compensation and Benefits: $85,000-$100,000 annually depending on experience. All full-time employees receive a competitive benefits package.
