Operations (Food Production) Manager

Overview

Job location is in Penticton, BC. Reporting to the VP of Engineering & Operations, the Operations Manager is responsible for oversight of all manufacturing processes and staff, with a focus on food production, quality and efficiency. This role will be central to fermentation and production planning, workflow and inventory management, logistics, team hiring and development.

This is a very hands-on role.

The ideal candidate is a self-starter who can implement production processes from scratch, has proven strength in resource planning, and creates a positive operational culture.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Develop, implement and oversee all production systems, procedures and staffing
• Lead by example in manufacturing areas; working with production staff, head fermentation scientist and technical staff to determine training needs and process improvements
• Conduct production activities on a daily basis including equipment operation, sanitation, sampling, equipment maintenance, etc.
• Establish and manage the production schedule and delegate tasks to the team on a daily basis
• Lead equipment maintenance program, ensuring equipment spares are on-hand as needed
• Manage inventory including defining appropriate inventory controls to ensure adequate inventory levels are maintained while minimizing costs
• Oversee all logistics, including raw material and product shipments, supply ordering and equipment purchasing
• Establish and manage production budget
• Identify and implement cost-saving measures where possible
• Develop and follow standard operating procedures in compliance with regulatory and company requirements
• Familiarity with CFIA, FDA, Kosher, Organic, and other food manufacturing regulatory standards
• Establish and implement Health, Safety and Environmental protocols and standards per the local authority
• Work closely with the Quality Manager to ensure full compliance with GMP and other regulatory standard as required
• Coordinate production and manage third party toll-processor
• Work closely with the Head of Fermentation during scale up to ensure product formulation is being carefully followed
• Track KPIs and manage ongoing operating performance against plans
• Assist in staff planning, hiring and onboarding
• Work collaboratively with all team members

Job Skills & Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a technical discipline preferred
• A minimum of 5 years’ experience in a GMP food manufacturing environment required
• Experience in fermentation science an asset
• Proficient in use of computer software (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.)
• Ability to work in a fast paced environment

• Experience working in a startup environment and scaling operations
• Exceptional organizational, written and verbal communication
• Ability to set priorities, meet deadlines and multi-task with minimal supervision
• Happy to work outdoors and in a production environment on a daily basis
• Must be located in, or willing to relocate to the Okanagan
• Must have a Valid Driver’s License and a car

Job Types: Full-time, Permanent

Salary: $80,000.00-$100,000.00 per year

Schedule:

• 8 hour shift
