Summary
Wiltshire Council is looking for volunteers to sit on their Independent Education Appeals Panel.
The panel hears and determines appeals submitted by parents or guardians as a result of being refused a place for their children at their preferred school, or as a result of their child being excluded from school.
Members sitting on the panel must be independent for the duration of their service.
Panels are made up of lay and education members, we are looking for both;
Lay members should have no previous teaching experience nor have been involved in the management of a school. However, experience as a School Governor or helping a school in a voluntary capacity would not exclude you from this category.
Education members would have experience in schools, are acquainted with the educational conditions in the Wiltshire area, and/or a parent who has a child registered at school.
Compulsory training will be provided for the role, with refresher courses held every so often. A Clerk is always available to give legal and procedural advice. The role is a voluntary position, so is unpaid.
Hearings take place between the hours of 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday. Appeal Panels sit all year round although the majority of appeals are heard between May and July. In quiet periods the role may only require a few hours a month. During the busy period, this may increase to a day or two a week. There is no minimum time commitment.
Our education appeal panels have a critical role to play in determining appeals fairly and openly from parents in our area.
It is important that we have a broad cross-section of our society sitting on them, so we have a panel with different employment and education backgrounds.
Being a volunteer panel member can be a good way of giving back to society, taking part in important decisions that affect the welfare of children and parents and keeping busy, and maintaining social interaction if you are not currently working.
We would urge people who are interested to get in touch and find out more.
Interviews will take place between 28 March and 01 April 2022.
Anyone successful in being selected would need to be available all day on 05 April 2022 to attend an online training session.
Unless otherwise indicated, all interviews are held virtually on Microsoft Teams or by phone where this is not possible. Candidates will be sent a link before the interview to download the Teams App
