Learning & Development Manager

Whitaker Construction founded in 1953, has over 67 years of experience in the heavy civil and underground utility construction industry. Whitaker, an ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan) company, has become one of the largest contractors in the intermountain area with more than 400 employees and nearly 50 crews. We perform sanitary sewer, storm drain, culinary water, irrigation, earthwork, roadway construction, dams, landfills, natural gas pipelines, industrial piping, and telecommunication projects primarily in Utah, Idaho, Nevada, Wyoming, Colorado, and Oregon.

The Learning & Development Manager will assist in fostering a culture of continuous learning and development through developing training curriculum, testing, as well as training policies and procedures. The candidate must have a passion for educating others and learning; has a good grasp of different learning styles and generational learning. Can identify the educational needs for all levels within the organization; recommends additions and/or revisions to new or existing training and supplemental materials. Will work to standardize the developmental programs while remaining flexible to meet division specific needs. This position reports to the VP of Human Resources.

Responsibilities

Core Responsibilities:

• Responsible for establishing training and development processes/procedures from basic onboarding to leadership development for the organization.
• Develop curriculum-based needs assessments (i.e., new technology, new product, and performance gaps).
• Partner with HRBP and business leaders to design and execute talent strategies
• Maintain the learning management system while optimizing the LMS capabilities.
• Facilitates learning through a variety of delivery methods including classroom instruction, virtual training, and on-the-job coaching.
• Assist with development, implementation, and sustainment of leadership programs to include all levels of leadership.
• Sets the training calendar for all training classes and events and ensures completion of training courses.
• Continually evaluates training progress and training procedures to monitor and analyze course effectiveness and update curriculum as needed.
• Ensure training materials, resources, and tools meet learning and performance objectives.
• Assess and validate learning to ensure objectives have been met.
• Measure and monitor effectiveness of training and development programs by assessing learning application, follow-through, and performance improvement.
• Develop new, review, and/or revise training guides and instructional material for in-house offered programs, SOP’s, training standards, competency evaluation forms, proficiency standards and other training documents as needed.
• Will maintain strong relationships local schools and trade schools to help educate and develop the in-coming workforce and promote Whitaker Construction as the employer of choice.
• Assist the VP of Human Resources in department and individual specific development plans to aid the succession planning process to include: 9-block, Risk & Impact, IPDs, High Potential Identification and Internship programs.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Qualifications and Educational Requirements:

• Bachelors degree in Business, Human Resources, Organizational Development or related field is required and 2-4 years of development experience.
• Experience with Learning Management Systems (LMS) required.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate and interact with others and communicate technical concepts.
• Must be a creative problem solver that is solutions oriented, focused and attentive to customer needs.
• Strong classroom and facilitation skills.
• Demonstrate expertise with Microsoft Office: Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
• Must be able to interact and communicate, with individuals at all levels of the organization.
• Work requires continual attention to detail in composing, typing and proofing materials, establishing priorities and meeting deadlines. Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment and demonstrate ability to multitask competing responsibilities and demands.
• Ability to read and write Spanish is a preferred.
