An exciting opportunity has arisen to join Westway Trust – a community-guided organisation, with an ambitious and exciting vision, in the heart of Portobello, West London – as an Adult Learning Tutor.

Westway Trust is a charity located in North Kensington which runs an adult learning programme of accredited and non-accredited provision across a range of subjects. We aim to enable people to progress in work, in learning and in life. Our learners come from a variety of backgrounds and have different prior experiences of learning.

We are particularly interested in applications from enthusiastic and experienced teachers delivering ESOL, food hygiene, digital skills, health & wellbeing, employability/capacity building and personal finance but happy to hear about other specialisms. The hours are negotiable and flexible and will be discussed and agreed at interview stage.

You will have the right blend and balance of commercial awareness, people management and business strategy, and committed to enhancing the lives of people in the local community.

Key responsibilities of the role include:

• Teaching to a high standard
• Registering new learners and running initial assessments during registration sessions
• Undertaking diagnostic assessment to identify individual needs and working with learners to write appropriate individual learning plans and monitor progress
• Setting group goals and collecting evidence to document learning in non-accredited courses
• Planning schemes of work which are in-line with learners’ needs and interests and fulfil the requirements of accredited and non-accredited learning
• Using teaching strategies appropriate to adult learners and producing high-quality learning materials
• To monitor student attendance and punctuality and take appropriate action as required
• Providing feedback to learners and on associated documentation for example: observation, IQA reports
• To attend and participate in meetings, including management meetings, end of term tutor meetings and Westway Trust staff meetings
• Attending training with Westway Trust and the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea and keeping up to date with developments in adult learning

Qualifications:

• A full teaching qualification for working in adult learning (DTLLS, PGCE or DET) or
• Hold a recent recognised teaching qualification such as CELTA (for ESOL teaching)
• A minimum GCSE English Grade C or equivalent if teaching ESOL/Literacy

Knowledge and Experience:

• Experience of teaching adult learners and an understanding of appropriate teaching strategies
• Experience of devising course outlines and schemes of work
• Experience of managing mixed groups of learners
• Experience of assessing and recording progress, both in accredited and non-accredited learning and supporting learners
• Ability to offer sound support in offering information, advice and guidance to learners
