We currently have an exciting opportunity for an Assistant Accountant at Perth Head Office, on a Permanent Full-Time basis.

About this role

As the Assistant Accountant, you will be required to assist and support in the accounting, preparation and development of financial reports in accordance with Australian Accounting Standards to deliver Western Power’s external financial reporting reports including statutory, regulatory, shareholder reporting and other ad hoc reporting as required.

In addition, this position is also responsible for processing payment runs, fund disbursements and asset accounting.

• General Ledger reconciliations and processing of journals and maintenance of capital work in progress
• Fixed Asset Register maintenance, including asset additions, transfers and disposals
• Provide guidance to the business regarding the treatment of expenditure in accordance with Western Power’s policies and the Australian accounting standards
• Assist with the continuous improvement initiatives for systems and processes to ensure alignment with Western Power’s accounting practices
• Support month end accounting for Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable including provision for bad debts and impairment
• Preparation of the Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) and cheque payment runs, including foreign currency payments
• Responding to internal and external customers regarding payment enquiries
• Actioning stop payments requests, issuing of replacements cheques, stale and cancelled cheques, returned mail and unclaimed monies as required
• Liaise with Corporate Finance re daily cash commitments and preparation of unpresented cheque reconciliations
• Process miscellaneous and supplier refund cheques, EOPS claims etc.
• Scan unclaimed monies for payments due to Western Power and action accordingly
• Ensuring security of Western Power cheque stationery including ordering, recording and maintenance of cheque stationery levels

About you

We are seeking someone with experience and attributes that include:

• Tertiary qualification in or studying towards in Accounting, Economics or Business with commensurate relevant industry experience
• At least 2 to 3 years previous experience in an accounting capacity with excellent attention to detail
• Requires an understanding of accounting fundamentals and principles
• Experience with accounting and bookkeeping tasks
• Experience using Excel and/or other accounting software
• Effective verbal and written communication skills
• Ability to complete tasks whilst maintaining confidentiality requirements
• Strong time-management skills, proven track record in prioritising work to meet deadlines
