Position Description

Title: Academic Instructor Department: Education & Employment

Supervisor: Mia Harvey,Director of EED

Job Summary

The Academic Instructor is responsible for providing on-going education services and education counseling through academic assessment, basic skills instruction, ABE/GED instruction, and tutorial services to participants ages 16+. This is a part-time position at an education and job training program that focuses on the unemployed and underemployed, including veterans, individuals with criminal backgrounds, and at-risk youth.

Regular hours are Monday – Friday 8:00 am – 2:00 pm, with flexibility in scheduling required.

Agency History

West End Neighborhood House has operated continuously on Wilmington’s West Side since 1883. Originally established as a reading room for Irish and Italian immigrants, the purpose and direction of West End has changed over the years as the needs and character of its service area have changed. Today, West End provides, with the help of the United Way and in cooperation with other public and private non-profit agencies, a variety of social and neighborhood services in a racially integrated neighborhood.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

These duties and responsibilities are performed on a frequent and recurring basis by an incumbent and include the following:

Instruction

• Teach academics classes (Reading, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and Writing) primarily for all academic levels: Beginning Basic ABE and Low and High Intermediate (roughly grades 2 -8.9) and GED (Low ASE, roughly grades 9 to 12)
• Review COA Reading, Math and writing portfolios and make recommendations
• Schedule and administer the TABE and Unofficial Practice Test (UPT) to qualified participants. Note: students are TABE tested after every 60 hours of instruction
• Register students for GED testing
• Monitor and track student performance/attendance (daily) and complete/issue report cards (monthly). Also, complete progress/case notes (and other relevant documentation) regarding student performance. Note: Attendance is recorded daily with monthly total calculations)
• Serve as a substitute for other program instructors
• Conduct tutorial sessions (group and individual)
• Coordinate post-secondary opportunities
• Identify participants who are interested in college
• Assist participants determine appropriate college/university
• Schedule and coordinate college/university tours (quarterly)
• Assist participants with the enrollment processes

Outcome Management

Monitor and analyze all performance outcomes to ensure alignment with contract requirements. Prepare and analyze reports to document the attainment of outcomes and ensure compliance with performance standards. Monthly reports are due the 5thof each month.

Other Duties

• Research best practices in teaching and education counseling
• Ensure timesheets are completed and accurate for bimonthly Paychex schedule
• Complete and submit mileage reimbursements and purchase requisitions
• Assist with the coordination and implementation of recognition and incentive activities
• Perform other duties as needed

Participatory Trainings/Meetings

• Attend contractor, agency, and community meetings, events, trainings, and workshops as scheduled
• Events include: Legislative Dinner, DAACE/Student Conference, Contractor Orientation, LACES Quarterly Chats, COA training, GED training, etc.

• Attend supervisory meetings (bi-weekly, unless otherwise instructed)
• Attend full staff Student Status Meetings (weekly)
• Attend full staff meetings (bi-weekly)

Qualifications required for this position

• Minimum education: Bachelor’s Degree, from an accredited college or university, in education, human services, or related field
• Possess, or able to acquire upon hire, an Adult Basic Education (ABE) Level I or Level II Permit
• Experience: At least three years’ experience working with youth and/or adults in an education or social service program
• Other Requirements: valid driver’s license required. Successful completion of criminal background checks.
