The mission of the Area Health Education Center (AHEC), in partnership with Rowan School of Medicine, is to enhance access to quality healthcare.
Funded by a 5 year grant from the US Department of Health and Human services, the AHEC focuses on:
Diversity – Preparing a diverse, culturally competent primary care workforce representative of the communities served.
Distribution – Improving workforce distribution throughout the nation.
Practice Transformation – Developing and maintaining a health care workforce that is prepared to deliver high quality care in a transforming health care delivery system with an emphasis on rural and underserved areas and communities.
Job Summary:
Responsible for the execution of strategic and operational oversight of all NJ Area Health Education Center (AHEC) programs and activities. Serves as the main liaison between Virtua Health and the NJ AHEC Program Office. Provides effective leadership for all constituents and ensures an outstanding student experience.
Position Responsibilities:
Provides primary oversight of the Area Health Education Center, ensuring it is meeting the expectations of the grant, the students, and the community. Proactively works toward building community connections and relationships both internally within Virtua Health as well as externally in the community. Serves as the main point of contact and collaborator with the AHEC Program Office. Drives outstanding student/customer/participant/colleague engagement and satisfaction.
Develop corridor for third year medical students to engage in robust field rotation within the Virtua network and communities. Works with all key stakeholders in achieving metrics to meet grant objectives and delivering exceptional results.
Attend all required monthly and quarterly meetings, maintain NAO membership and contribute to any board membership(s) necessary.
Maintains overall budget responsibility for the Area Health Education Center. Works with leadership and finance to create and manage operations budget with a consistent focus on expense management. Regularly monitors both federal and non-federal budgets to ensure compliance with departmental and system-wide goals. Prepare and submit quarterly reports and financial invoices that are reflective of the efforts exerted within the period.

Required Experience:
Must have strong leadership, organization and management skills. A minimum of 5+ years prior experience required in the following:
Must have experience in local food, community, social justice, public health and/or local economies and be motivated by the mission of providing valuable experiential learning opportunities and resources to future healthcare professionals.
Experience with or understanding of marginalized communities.
Must display ease and comfort with people of different backgrounds, abilities, opinions and perceptions and demonstrate the ability to treat all people with equity and respect.
Required Education:
Bachelor’s degree in related field required, Master’s degree in related field preferred
Training / Certification / Licensure:
Valid NJ Driver license
