VDOT Richmond District is pleased to announce an exciting opportunity to serve as a Traffic Engineer in our Richmond District Traffic Operations (RDTO) located in Colonial Heights, Virginia. Do you have experience conducting traffic engineering studies in the field? Have you designed traffic control plans? Are you familiar with traffic impact analyses? As a Traffic Engineer at the Richmond District, you will have the opportunity to conduct traffic engineering studies such as traffic signal studies, speed studies, roadway and pedestrian safety and capacity analyses. The selected candidate will also develop, review and provide guidance on pavement marking and markers, sign plans and other traffic control device plans for the district. This position will have the opportunity to provide assistance in traffic impact analyses and site plan review to ensure the established policies and design standards are properly followed. You will collect and analyze traffic related data; and develop recommendations and make presentations. VDOT is an emergency response agency and this position is required to work outside of normal work hours during emergency operations.
Minimum Qualifications
The successful candidate will have:
- Extensive knowledge of traffic engineering principles, practices and standards
- Experience conducting and reviewing traffic impact analysis and site plans for private developments, state and federal projects
- Experience collecting and analyzing traffic related data
- Experience in developing plans for traffic control devices, incorporating traffic engineering requirements into roadway plans and making recommendations for plan changes
- Experience in conducting traffic engineering studies involving traffic operations, traffic control devices, and roadway and pedestrian safety and capacity issues
- Skill in the use of computers and software applications to include traffic engineering and design software such as CADD, Microstation, Highway Capacity Software, Synchro, SIDRA, etc.
- Experience gathering data, developing recommendations and making presentations
- Valid driver’s license required
Preferred Qualifications
- Degree in Civil Engineering or related field preferred; equivalent experience and training may substitute for degree
- Skill in using CADD, Microstation, Highway Capacity Software, Synchro/Sim Traffic, and SIDRA
- EIT or PE preferred
Special Requirements
References, work history and DMV records will be verified prior to employment. Fingerprint-based background check required. Position is designated as essential to emergency operations and will be required to work outside normal work hours to ensure the safety of the traveling public.
