To achieve this, VAGO annually conducts over 530 financial audits and numerous performance audits across a diverse range of portfolios including infrastructure, transport, health and social services, education, water, local government, insurance, justice, treasury and superannuation. Our structure
We have two audit portfolios within VAGO: Performance Audit and Financial Audit. Our audit support function is split into the Office of the Auditor-General and Corporate Services.

Our Financial Audit group is a diverse group of approximately 70 highly motivated audit professionals. You will be part of a supportive team committed to professional excellence that will help you build skills to advance your career.
Our clients are responsible for physical assets worth more than $400 billion and have a combined annual turnover of more than $85 billion. While completing financial audits, you’ll go beyond the numbers to look at the issues of value for money, integrity and accountability.
Our independent audit role gives us exclusive access to our clients. What you’ll do

Assistant Managers at VAGO are dynamic, adaptable leaders with the ability to motivate and coach others to achieve their work goals. Assistant Managers are accredited by Certified Practising Accountants Australia (CPA), Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CAANZ) or the Institute of Public Accountants (IPA). As team leaders, they are responsible for the delivery of a work program which includes financial audits and business improvement initiatives.
VAGO’s Assistant Managers are rigorous and innovative in their approach to work and are motivated by the challenge of promoting continuous improvement in the Victorian public sector. They create opportunities for others to learn and develop, while actively pursuing their own professional development goals.

Key responsibilities

Behaviour
Promote and model the established VAGO values set including:

• Actively pursue learning and development opportunities that align with VAGO’s goals including active participation in house designed and delivered technical training sessions
• Contribute to continuous improvement by participating in audit meetings/debriefs and sharing lessons learned

Operations

• Manage assigned components of an audit as a team senior or team leader and deliver quality work within agreed budgets and timeframes. This may include all aspects of an audit if assigned team leader
• Provide direction and allocate tasks to junior team members, as required
• Present audit findings, evidence, conclusions and recommendations to your team and audit clients, including senior stakeholders
• Establish and maintain positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders
• Exercise judgement in managing audit issues and escalating contentious issues
• Identify risks to an audit or project and then seek to minimise, mitigate or manage them
• Demonstrate a sound understanding of auditing standards and guidelines, audit methodology and processes
• Identify and scope relevant audit topics as part of VAGO’s strategic and annual plan development process, as required

Contribute to continuous improvement by:

• Implementing changes that enhance work processes and systems
• Contribute to the development and implementation of business improvement projects as required.

What you’ve studied

• Tertiary qualifications in Finance, Accounting, Science, Technology, Economics or Mathematics, preferably at a postgraduate level
• Full professional membership with CPA Australia, CAANZ or the IPA
• A sound working knowledge of Australian Accounting and Auditing Standards, legislative and regulatory requirements
• Experience undertaking audits or complex investigations, inquiries or reviews
