At VAPAR, we’re creating a smarter way to keep underground pipes in operation, longer. Piped infrastructure around the world needs to be maintained and repaired in a way that removes the need for long, manual, and fatiguing tasks. Currently, some people watch hours of video footage of pipe inspections to find issues and have outdated processes to manage their data. We’re the team that’s changing this.

We turn visual data about everyday pipes directly into condition scores so maintenance and repairs happen faster, cheaper, and more accurately.

We’re looking for someone mid to senior level who is comfortable taking ownership of their role. In this role, you’ll be working within our tech team on our automation technology, creating high-performance models and generating insights. As the team grows, you’ll have the opportunity to grow with a great team, and we’ll support you with the required training to do so. Day in the life

We’re seeking an experienced and motivated Data Scientist with a solid educational foundation in data science, mathematics, statistics, physics, or similar disciplines. The ideal candidate should be well-versed in software development principles, possess a strong foundation in Python programming, and demonstrate a proven track record in data engineering and model development. In addition to these skills, the right candidate should have a good understanding of deep learning frameworks and be well versed in libraries such as PyTorch and Tensorflow. As a Data Scientist at VAPAR, you’ll collaborate with the team to deliver high-quality software solutions that meet customer needs and drive company success.

The Data Scientist role entails a comprehensive engagement with machine learning and data modelling processes, including:

• Utilising Deep Learning, Machine Learning, and Statistical Modelling techniques to create and refine various algorithms, including regression, classification, detection, and recognition models.
• Playing a pivotal role throughout the entire machine learning model lifecycle, which encompasses data analysis, pre-processing, modelling, optimisation, and ongoing monitoring.
• Enhancing the scalability, stability, accuracy, speed, and overall efficiency of our existing machine learning infrastructure and workflows.
• Crafting and managing scripts for efficient data extraction, data management, and model training.
• Designing and executing innovative experiments within machine learning and data pipeline frameworks to proactively discover and address any performance bottlenecks.
• Diligently monitoring machine learning model performance, swiftly identifying, and troubleshooting issues, and deploying effective solutions to maintain and improve model accuracy.
• Streamlining ML processes and data annotation tasks through the automation of repetitive routines.
• Effectively communicating/ documenting complex modelling techniques, experimental strategies, and outcomes to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, ensuring clarity and actionable understanding.

Must-have skills

On day one we’ll expect you to have…

• Bachelor or Master degree in data science, mathematics, statistics, physics, or other related fields (or equivalent work experience).
• 2+ years of professional experience in Python software development and its libraries, especially in the context of data analysis and machine learning.
• Strong research skills with the ability to dig through deep learning literature and translate this into viable use cases.
• Hypothesis driven approach for constant and incremental development of a large-scale model system.
• Experience in SQL for data extraction and analysis.
• Hands-on experience in Pandas, Numpy, TensorFlow/Keras.
• Excellent communication skills.

Desirable skills to have..

• Proficiency in Databricks is greatly valued
• Strong proficiency in PySpark
• Hands-on experience with ETL (Extract, Transform, Load)
• Familiarity with Microsoft Azure, particularly with Azure Machine Learning Studio
• Advanced commercial analytical abilities for extracting insights and driving business outcomes from complex datasets

As a Civil Engineer, Amanda had seen enough of the inefficiencies in the pipe condition assessment process, and teamed up with Michelle (a Mechatronic Engineer with Intelligent Systems experience) to build technology to enable pipe asset managers to revolutionise their way of working. Since then, the VAPAR team has grown and now has clients in Australia, the UK and New Zealand and continues to scale.
