Full Job Description
Duties
Major Duties:
- Performs operation maintenance (e.g., monitoring fluid levels, replacing air filters and interior lights, checking tire pressure and hose connection, etc.,) and clean vehicles as needed.
- Provides non-emergent, safe transportation of eligible veterans and cargo.
- Interacts in a courteous and respectful manner with a wide variety of people each day and assists disabled individuals boarding and un-boarding the vehicle.
- Provides the Veterans Transportation System program (VTS) office a list of veterans who arrived at the Southeast Louisiana Veterans Healthcare System (SLVHCS) via the VTS transportation van every day.
- Ensures only eligible veterans and their caregivers are transported to the Medical Center or satellite clinic and returned to their respective pick-up locations.
- Operates forklift truck to load and unload cargo from vehicles
- Performs other duties as assigned
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 8:00am-4:30pm

Qualifications
DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.
LICENSE REQUIREMENT: This position requires a current, valid state issued Commercial Driver’s License (Class A, B, or C) with passenger endorsement. NOTE: We cannot accept photographs, therefore please do not submit a copy of your license with your application package. If an interview is conducted, you will be required to provide a copy of your license at that time.
PHYSICAL EFFORT: Light physical effort in reaching, bending, turning, or moving hands, arms, feet, and legs to operate hand and foot controls. Moderate physical effort in the frequent handling of objects weighing up to 40 pounds. Considerable physical efforts may be required to change tires and make limited emergency repairs, such as installing an emergency fan belt or replacing an electrical fuse on open highways.
WORK CONDITIONS: Employee works mostly outside, is exposed to dirt and fumes, and to the possibility of cuts and bruises, and broken bones as a result of accidents while driving or from falling objects when loading and unloading the vehicle.

For this position, the job element method is used to match what you, the applicant, can do against what the work calls for. Your knowledge, skills and abilities will be compared to the knowledge, skills and abilities (called job elements) needed for success. Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element (WG-2 and higher only; screen-outs are not applicable to WG-1). Applicants who appear to meet the screen out element are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated from consideration. The potential eligibles are rated against the remainder of the job elements. While a specific length of training and experience is not required, your responses to the questionnaire must be supported by detailed descriptions of your experience on your resume.

Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
