STATUS: 12 month – salaried, exempt

POSITION SUMMARY:

Urban Pathways K-5 College Charter School (“Urban Pathways K-5” or
“School”) is seeking a dedicated educational leader with a demonstrated ability to manage a diverse student population. The Principal is responsible for using leadership, supervisory, and administrative skills to promote the educational development of each student at Urban Pathways K-5 in accordance with established mission, vision, and Board of Trustees (“Board”) Policy. This position requires significant independent analysis and problem-solving skills, as well as teambuilding, facilitation, leadership, and organizational skills, while always maintaining the highest possible standards for the instructional programs of
Urban Pathways K-5.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

• Communicates effectively with school and community audiences.

• Maintains high standards of ethics, honesty, and integrity in both personal and professional matters.

• Promotes participation of School personnel and community residents in decision making yet makes appropriate administrative decisions as necessary.

• Serves as a role model and representative for the School.

• Continues to grow professionally through reading, attendance at conferences and workshops, and participation in appropriate educational and community organizations.

• Demonstrates interpersonal skills and a willingness to deal directly and openly with teachers, support staff, administrators, members of the Board of Trustees, students, parents, and members of the community.

• Deals innovatively with situations arising in the School.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATES:

• Valid Pennsylvania Certificate of Superintendent Letter of Eligibility,

IU/VOC Director Certification or Principal Certification.

• Masters’ degree.

• Ten years’ experience in school administration and supervision preferred.

• Demonstrated success with curriculum, personnel management, and staff development.

• Experience with MS Office, Windows, and other relevant software.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Instructional Leadership

• Maintains the quality of educational programs and services to students and improves programs and services.

• Studies and reviews with staff all curriculum guides and courses of study on a continuing basis. Recommends, for Board adoption, curricula, courses, textbooks, and time schedules.

• Encourages staff to develop programs, services, and projects which reflect instructional diversity, alternatives, and flexibility, while assuring an articulated, consistent education for all students.

• Provides for an annual assessment of student needs and achievement and initiates program changes based on informative data.

• Develops guidelines and direction for monitoring the effectiveness of existing and new programs.

• Ensures that the goals of the school are adequately reflected in its educational program and operations.

• Ensures implementation of all Board-approved curriculum and inclusion of state-mandated programs and curriculum content standards.

• Provides for curriculum articulation among grades in the school.

• Ensures that curriculum, teacher performance, work productivity, supervision, administration, student performance and parent relations are effectively meeting organizational mission, vision, needs, and objectives through annual and periodic assessment, evaluation, and documentation.

• Shares a commitment to the success of and serves as advocate for the missions, goals, and objectives of the Charter School.

• Demonstrates commitment to the charter school model and to the success of students, including special needs students of all types, and to that of the parents, teachers, and staff.

• Adapts methods to close the achievement and opportunity gaps in the classroom.

Personnel Administration

• Directs and supervises administrative staff, except the CEO, and, through them, all school staff.

• Provides a role model as well as direction and supervision to the administrative staff in the development and implementation of sound personnel practices.

• Develops recruitment procedures to assure well-qualified applicants for professional and nonprofessional positions. Participates in final candidate interviews, as appropriate, and recommends appointments of all staff to the Board.

• Ensures that all staff are evaluated in accordance with law and established procedures.

• Facilitates shared decision-making and service orientation in support of the students, staff, parents, Board of Trustees, and the charter school community.

• Monitors and ensures professional staffing is within charter school certification guidelines.

School/Community Relations

• Ensures that school interests will be represented in meetings and activities of District, municipal and other governmental agencies.

• Represents the school and its interests in community organizations, activities, and projects.

• Develops strategies to promote parental involvement in their children’s education and provides opportunities for parent-teacher interaction.

• Identifies available community resources and linkages to social service agencies that support education and healthy child development.

• Works cooperatively and in collaboration with staff, administration, and

Board to provide parents and families with information and support to carry out their commitment to the charter school students and goal to close opportunity and achievement gaps in the classroom.

Principal Duties

• Provides leadership in identification of priorities and assures that all activities reflect Board-established priorities.

• Prepares and recommends short-range and long-range plans for Board approval and implements those plans when approved.

• Attends all regular and special meetings of the Board and participates in a professional leadership role.

• Anticipates potential problems. Recommends policies or courses of staff action.

• Plans and organizes services of the charter school to meet organizational objectives, mission, vision, and curricula requirements.

• Is responsible for any and all educational and service programs conducted for the charter school.

• Ensures that curriculum, teacher performance, work productivity, supervision, administration, student performance, and parent relations are effectively meeting organization mission, vision, needs, and objectives through annual and periodic assessment, evaluation, and documentation.

• Discharges such other responsibilities as may be directed by the Board of

Trustees.
