The University has recently transformed its Information Technology department into a newly formed Information and Digital Group (IDG). The group is making significant investment in support of the research community.
The Research IT team has a vacancy for a skilled and motivated Software Engineer. This is an opportunity to make an impact as part of a small and growing service team alongside technical professionals across the group as well as direct interaction with researchers particularly from arts and social sciences disciplines.
This role will suit you if in addition to strong technical ability you are adaptable, thorough and analytical and will be energised working with a variety of technologies and academics in tangibly contributing to Warwick’s research excellence.
The team works directly with academic colleagues to design, prototype, build and maintain applications for research activity. Objectives for this role will include: (i) Contributing high quality code to new and ongoing projects, (ii) the transition of existing projects into more resource efficient configurations for sustainability and future scalability (iii), expanding the service’s coverage within the Configuration and Management Database (CMDB) as well as to responding to emerging priorities set by the Group’s new Digital Strategy.

Job Description
Responsible for the management and maintenance of live public systems (websites, databases, API endpoints, cloud services) and end-of-life processes as well as playing a key role in the design and implementation of robust, reusable, supported and sustainable technological solutions in new and ongoing projects.
This role requires utilisation of central and cloud infrastructure and coordination with Information and Digital Group teams. Candidates will have demonstrable skills in the management of production and test web application environments for multiple technology stacks used in research and the digital humanities. Examples could be open source applications written in Python, Node.js, Php, Java and XML/XSLT.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES
Software Development
1. Identify and implement feature improvements relevant to research through the customisation and extension of open-source applications within their respective frameworks (e.g. plugin development).
2. Deploy existing domain knowledge, or rapidly accumulate more to understand systems requirements, design and build solutions for research activities using standard IT technical and cloud services where appropriate.
Application and service management
3. Manage the service’s application instances of open-source software (Drupal, Omeka, WikiMedia, etc) that use associated third-party, bespoke commissioned and in-house developed plugins. Support them in line with IDG strategy and in resource efficient configurations.
User engagement and support
Undertake other duties commensurate with the level and scope of the role.
