The Coordinator, Historical Collections is located in the Library and Cultural Collections, within the Academic Division.
The Library and Cultural Collections enables the discovery of, and access to print, electronic, and cultural collections in spaces and galleries that are innovative, engaging, and inspiring. We collaborate with Colleges, students, staff, and community to support learning, teaching, and research. We provide expertise and advice on the use, sharing, and management of information including copyright and information, digital, and research skills development online and via a physical presence, in seven locations across four campuses.


The Opportunity
As the successful Coordinator, Historical Collections you will contribute towards a state-wide University Cultural Strategy and oversee the University’s Special & Rare Collection, University Historical Collection, and the Waterworth Optical Collection. A key aspect of the role is liaising with donors, researchers, students, and academic staff; assisting with research queries, use of collections for exhibits, object-based learning, collection documentation, care, and display. Through a long-term partnership with the Royal Society of Tasmania, the Coordinator, Historical Collections is the primary contact and has responsibility for the Royal Society of Tasmania Collection housed within the University.


Key Accountabilities:
  • Provide contemporary collections expertise for new and existing items and collections.
  • In collaboration with Colleges and Divisions, develop and embed object-based learning programs into the curriculum and research activities using the University’s historic collections.
  • Liaise with donors, lenders, borrowers, historians, conservators, building facilities technicians, educators, web, marketing teams and other stakeholders for collection related duties.
  • Collaborate with teaching staff and researchers to provide access to objects and expertise related to the collections, and support of non-traditional research outcomes (such as exhibitions and object displays)
  • Prepare and coordinate documentation – including but not limited to acquisition minutes, deeds of gift, receipts, catalogue records, condition reports, stock takes, loan agreements, license agreements, as well as the provision of collection data and stories for various information channels
Your Application
To be successful in the role, your application will need to demonstrate;
  • A degree in either cultural heritage, museology, librarianship, history, arts administration and experience and specialist expertise with heritage collections, or an equivalent combination of training, qualifications, and experience.
  • Experience in and understanding of contemporary collection management practices.
  • Understanding and appreciation for the role university collections can play in learning and research.
  • Experience in collection research, cataloguing, and significance assessments
  • Organisational and project management skills and the capacity to supervise staff in the documentation, display, and care of cultural heritage objects


Remuneration
Appointment to this role will be at HEO 6 and will have a total remuneration package of up to $102,353 comprising base salary within the range of $80,675 to $87,481 plus 17% superannuation.
