The USC Wrigley Institute for Environmental Studies (WIES) is seeking enthusiastic environmentalists to assist in education and outreach programs at the Wrigley Marine Science Center (WMSC) on Catalina Island.

Located at the USC Wrigley Marine Science Center (WMSC) at Big Fisherman Cove on Catalina Island, your full-time temporary role as an Education Assistant will be to support early spring and summer education programs at Catalina Island. This position will also involve some overall administrative assistance for the WMSC.

In this role, you will work with WMSC’s Science Operations group to facilitate a variety of education groups during the summer season. Duties will involve support for classroom meetings and field activities, as well as co-curricular experiences such as hiking, kayaking and snorkeling in the local environment. Working closely with WMSC staff, you will build skills in environmental education, learn the inner working of a marine research laboratory, and network with researchers and visitors from multiple institutions.

This position is eligible for benefits through USC as a Resource Employee. The position is expected to last through the middle of August, with the potential to be extended.

Schedule: Typical schedule is Thursday-Monday, 8:00am-4:30pm; schedule may vary, but we guarantee 37.5 hours/week. Some weekend and evening hours required.

Housing and Living Arrangements: You are eligible for a private or shared housing in Two Harbors starting at $438/month (trash and sewer utilities included).

Specific job duties:

• Assist groups to achieve their educational goals in the field and in the lab
• Assist in water activities, such as snorkeling or kayaking, to ensure safety of participants
• Assist with inventory maintenance for education program supplies (including waterfront gear)
• Assist with development of new activities as requested
• Occasional administrative duties as assigned

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience in teaching to diverse audiences in either formal or informal settings
• Knowledge of local environment (marine and/or terrestrial)
• Strong water skills (snorkeling, kayaking, swimming etc.)

This role requires that you have strong water skills and preferably CPR & First Aid training. If you do not already have these certifications, we may be able to get you certified once you are on site.
