Summary:

Do you enjoy working with people and communities? Are you a good communicator and clear writer? Would you like to make

a positive difference to children in secondary schools and in diverse communities? If so, you may be right for this project on

Relationship and Sex Education (RSE).

We have an exciting opportunity for a researcher who enjoys and is good at community engagement. You would support the

introduction of a new RSE curriculum in schools. You would help to ensure that this progressive and innovative new teaching

curriculum is inclusive, speaking to children from varied backgrounds in language they and their parents understand. This

involves working with parents in faith communities, and also with teachers in the schools their children attend.

We are looking for a friendly person with experience of working with people and communities. You should also have training

and experience in social research methods. You will be a good communicator who writes and speaks clearly. You don’t need

detailed knowledge of faith communities; you do need to respect peoples’ beliefs.

You will be based in the Department of Geography at The University of Sheffield, and you will also work with researchers in

Literature at York University and Sociological Studies at Sheffield Hallam. You will also be working with project partners

Faithstar, which engages faith communities in the Sheffield region, and Learn Sheffield, which advises schools on sex

education and other areas of the curriculum. Based in a World Top 100 university, you would have opportunities to advance

your research career and community networks.

Supported by the team and project partners, you would convene a forum bringing together parents of faith, teachers and

schools. You will also help with writing, piloting and disseminating resources for teachers and schools. You do not need prior

knowledge of RSE; you do need to be able to collate, write and communicate information and ideas.

This project follows on from a research project investigating sexual relationship attitudes and practices among young people

with faith backgrounds. You would work with outputs of that project – including short stories, films and innovative methods

for initiating conversations about sex and relationships – to develop classroom materials.
