Position Summary:
The primary role of the Organismal Biological Sciences Technician is to provide technical support services mainly related to the teaching operations of the Department of Biology, including the areas of plant growth facilities, direct care of plants used for teaching, repair and maintenance of equipment, equipment inventory and disposal of old equipment, disposal of teaching chemicals, animal carcass disposal, and undergraduate lab preparation, set-up and tear down. Research-related duties are more indirect and include some overlap with teaching-related duties. These include: maintenance of the Ledingham Herbarium, maintenance of the Plant Growth Facility, disposal of research animal carcasses, bar-coding of research equipment.
Primary tasks for labs:
Preparing consumables;
Practicing good sterile techniques;
Calculating dilutions and using simple mathematical formulae;
Examining specimens microscopically;
Using vital stains;
Sterilizing and disposing of biohazardous wastes (organize and arrange appropriate disposal of teaching animal carcasses);
Keeping clear and detailed records, creating and maintaining SOPs as needed, and maintaining updated notes for each lab;
Cleaning and sterilizing glassware and other non-disposable materials;
Maintaining and checking inventory of chemicals, specimens, and other equipment and consumables;
Placing orders for materials not in stock, and/or procuring supplies from local vendors;
Collecting and/or preparing specimens;
Ordering and caring for plants required for teaching;
Using growth chambers for plant rearing;
Preparing chemical solutions and media;
Cleaning and maintaining microscopes in good working order;
Operating, maintaining, checking functioning of, and calibrating equipment;
Maintaining stocks, including oversight of the spaces in which they are held;
Aid in laboratory review for Lab Departure procedure;
Updating computers, and software;
Performing daily checks on crucial equipment (eg. freezers, walk-in coolers, growth chambers, incubators, etc.);
Assisting the Molecular Biological Sciences Technician during periods of high work load, if instructed by the Coordinator, Science Operations; and,
Other related duties as assigned.
The technician needs to be flexible and have excellent time management skills, as the work is not always predictable.

Position Requirements
Position Requirements:
Applicable post-secondary education (BSc degree in Biology or Environmental Science), with preference given to those with animal and plant experience.
3 years’ experience in a laboratory setting.
A valid Class 5 Saskatchewan Driver’s License.
A successful Technician will possess:
Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks for several teaching labs each term.
Ability to maintain a safe, orderly work area.
Ability to recognize and initiate tasks necessary to the department’s function without supervision.
Ability to help the Laboratory Instructor run, troubleshoot and optimize new lab exercises to ensure they will work for students in the manner intended.
Ability to rear, handle, and care for invertebrates.
Ability to work with preserved and decaying animals.
Stay current with WHMIS certification and perform regular checks on safety equipment (e.g. eyewashes).
Be able to lift heavy objects (40+ lbs).
Coordinate chemical and biological disposal for teaching materials.
Attend and represent technicians at Science Safety Committee meetings (if necessary).
Willingness and ability to acquire and maintain First Aid training.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs.
Flexible working hours, as needed by timetable requirements.
Excellent communication, organizational and teamwork skills.
Ability to adapt to unscheduled requests for assistance an asset.
Identify and follow proper treatment for plant pests and diseases.
Maintain the Plant growth facility in clean, organized working order, and schedule space use.
Maintain an updated inventory of equipment and salvage items within the Biology department.
Ability to multitask under pressure dealing with competing deadlines in a busy setting with many interruptions.

Pay Grade CUPE Phase 4 Salary Range $44,776.16 – $60,485.36 Annually Status Permanent Work Hours
As per Applied Scientific Services.
Weekends, when needed.
