The core mission at the Gonski Institute for Education is to address inequity in Australian education. Our research addresses the sources of inequity at all levels, from individual learners and their families, to schools and other educational institutions and their communities, through to systems and policies.

The Research Assistant will support the Institute’s Director and Deputy Director and will primarily involve literature review, and data collation and curation. This role requires a flexible schedule to work approximately 1 day per week, starting as soon as possible, until the end of 2022. There is the possibility of work beyond this date.

About the role

• Level 6; $62.82 per hour
• Casual ongoing role until end of 2022, with possibility of extension
• Hours dependent on availability

The Research Assistant reports to the Institute’s Director and Deputy Director, and has no direct reports. This position will be based in the Gonski Institute for Education.

Specific responsibilities for this role include:

• Collate, analyse, and interpret data, communicate with supervisors, and assist with the preparation data for publication
• Assist with the coordination of research activities and actively contribute to research outputs to meet project milestones.
• Prepare documentation that is clear, accurate, succinct, and appropriate for the target audience
• Develop a culture of continuous improvement by promoting pursuit of excellence in all practices
• Solve diverse problems by applying judgement, knowledge, and initiative
• Analyse and respond with tact and discretion to unexpected and complicated issues and queries
• Other appropriate tasks assigned by the supervisor, relevant and consistent with the position
• Align with and actively demonstrate the UNSW Values in Action: Our Behaviours and the UNSW Code of Conduct
• Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the health and safety of yourself or others.

About the successful applicant
(Selection Criteria)

To be successful in this role you will have:

• Relevant tertiary qualification with subsequent relevant experience or equivalent competence gained through any combination of education, training, and experience.
• Experience conducting searches of peer-reviewed literature and relevant ‘grey literature’, and preparing annotated bibliographies based on these.
• Experience managing and analysing qualitative and/or qualitative datasets and using analytical software such as NVIVO, SPSS, GIS.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with experience interpreting and writing reports based on qualitative data.
• Excellent interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to liaise effectively within a large team of researchers.
• High level organisational skills with proven ability to deal with multiple tasks, establish priorities and meet deadlines.
• Familiarity with Australian education is desirable.
• An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
• Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training
