Job Description
The Missouri School of Journalism’s Earl F. English Graduate Studies Center is pleased to announce an opening for a Senior Academic Advisor position. The position is responsible for the following:
Advising approximately 100+ master’s students each semester on course selection and program requirements; scholastic and probation problems and how to resolve them; add/drop procedures and deadlines; and other related actions. Referring students to various University resources as needed for assistance, such as Financial Aid, the Counseling Center, Disability Services, the Learning Center, Student Health, etc. Assisting students with required paperwork. Assisting international students in maintaining compliance with visa regulations (per International Center).
Maintaining student records. Maintain degree audits and check graduation requirements.
Apprising students and faculty of campus deadlines and policies for Registrar, Financial Aid, and the Graduate School; Interpreting academic and program policies and procedures for students and faculty.
Coordinating applications for various Journalism programs and scholarships (Washington Program, New York Program, investigative reporting scholarship, other opportunities).
Develop orientation program for incoming master’s students in August and January; distributing information and conducting pre-advising for incoming students prior to their arrival.
Promoting program to prospective students in response to email and telephone inquiries; helping to coordinate campus visits of prospective students; coordinating other recruitment activities with associate dean for graduate studies.
Working with faculty to identify potential areas of program development, advising on campus policies regarding curriculum and graduation requirements. Serve on college/school/division and/or campus-wide committees as directed. Represent the division at meetings, conferences and other functions.
Coordinate graduate assistantship program. Collecting and posting assistantship positions each semester; collecting applications; distributing to faculty in timely fashion; tracking hires and coordinating payroll paperwork. Publicizing guidelines and policies regarding assistantships; answering faculty and student questions about policies and guidelines governing the program. Assuring compliance with department, campus and federal laws and policies.
Work with the associate dean and faculty to determine master’s scholarship recipients, as well as scholarship amounts. Assigning scholarships as appropriate from a variety of scholarship accounts and recording these assignments in a master list; ensuring compliance with scholarship requirements and preferences. Communicating scholarship awards to Financial Aid and to other offices within School of Journalism.
Attend Graduate Faculty meetings. Working with the Associate Dean on meeting agenda. Nominate when appropriate, graduate faculty (A & C). Keep membership list up to date.
Other duties as assigned.
Salary
Salary commensurate with education and experience.
Salary Range: $40,498 – $56,940/ year
Grade: GGS-009

Shift
Working hours are generally 8-5, Monday – Friday. Occasional weekend or evening hours may be required.
Minimum Qualifications
A Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 2 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.
