The opportunity:
The Governance Secretary is responsible for managing and facilitating all activities of the NCTR Governing and Survivors Circles and other committees that may be established by the NCTR. This includes but not limited to liaising with committee members and to oversee all activities, meetings and governance action as required. The position is responsible for the day-to-day management support of the Governance unit to the Director in meeting the objectives of the NCTR Mandate. The incumbent oversees administrative support staff and directs activities, procedures, plans, schedules all meetings as well as drafts, writes and follows up on internal and external documentation including all Governance resolutions.
The qualifications and experience we’re looking for:
PREFERENCE WILL BE GIVEN TO INDIGENOUS CANDIDATES. APPLICANTS MUST SELF-DECLARE ON THEIR COVER LETTER/RESUME AS INDIGENOUS (FIRST NATION, METIS AND/OR INUIT).
· An undergraduate degree in business, governance or a related field is required.
· Four years of directly related Governance experience in a complex environment is required. I.e., Government agency, university, large non-profit, tribal, indigenous or corporate organization or Board of Governors. – Experience working directly with a Director or Senior Staff level is required.
· Experience in writing high-level communications, reports and briefing notes for Governance is required.
· Experience in forecasting and the financial management of budgets is required.
· Experience in event planning and execution is required.
· Previous experience with Indigenous organizations, survivors, elders and diverse communities is essential.
· Experience with the operation of post-secondary institutions is essential.
· Knowledge of and sensitivity to Indigenous cultures is essential.
· Public speaking is an asset. – Experience working with VIP, FAST, Epic, and Concur is preferred.
· An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
· Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills and be able to work effectively with students, staff, faculty, Elders, alumni, Indigenous communities, community organizations, and the public.
· High degree of analytical thinking preferred.
· Must possess a demonstrated ability to work independently and accurately under pressure.
· Problem solving and conflict resolution skills preferred.
· Must have exceptional decision-making and interpersonal skills including diplomacy and tact.
· Must have a demonstrated ability to deal with high demand and/or stressful contacts.
· Must have a strong work ethic and be willing to take the initiative to solve problems and learn new tasks.
· Attention to detail is essential.
· Well-developed knowledge of general office practices is essential.
· Must be pleasant and efficient in communication with students and staff.
· Must have excellent organizational and time management skills.
· Must be proficient with Microsoft Office and using intermediate features associated with a Windows computer environment including: database/spreadsheet management, calendar software, and mail software.
· Cultural sensitivity; open-mindedness; flexibility is required.
· Independence, diplomacy, self-motivation, confidentiality and ability to work with many types of individuals in sensitive environments is required.
· Must be proficient in multi-tasking in order to meet competing deadlines.
· Must be able to perform efficiently under changing and heavy workloads.
· Must possess a Class 5 Drivers license.
· Ability to speak French and/or an Indigeonous language is an asset.
· Knowledge of University policies/procedures would be an asset.
· Satisfactory work record, including attendance and punctuality, is required.
