Duties and Responsibilities
Engage in the education and training of faculty, residents, medical and `Imi Ho`ola students, including tutoring in the Problem-Based Learning curriculum.
Diagnose root causes (individual and system factors) that contribute to poor or suboptimal academic/clinical performance in learners
Collaborate with faculty and staff in the OME, Learning Community Mentors, and/or Evaluation, Remediation and Review Committee (ERRC) to develop individualized educational and remediation plans, including individualized academic counseling for students to promote successful matriculation. Provides feedback and ongoing monitoring of students to ERRC and faculty.
Provides lectures and small group teaching to learners regarding strategies to optimize their academic/clinical performance
Provide medical education expertise for the development of institution-wide interventions, programs, and assessment models that optimize learner academic/clinical performance.
Work collaboratively with faculty and staff in the Office of Medical Education, the `Imi Ho`ola Program, and the Office of the Designated Institutional Official to improve learner assessment efforts.
Provide faculty development sessions that improve teaching (classroom / clinical) and enhance an individual faculty member’s abilities to identify and productively work with challenged learners.
Work collaboratively with others in the Office of Student Affairs (OSA) and Office of Medical Education (OME) to design and implement academic skill-building workshops to improve medical student development of life-long learning skills in areas such as time management, critical reasoning, learning strategies, study skills, and test-taking strategies.
Coordinate efforts with other members of OSA and OME to support supplementary academic services that complement coursework including, but not limited to, comprehensive USMLE Step 1 and Step 2CK preparation plans and workshops for medical students, and stress-reduction techniques during key periods of finals and preparation for USMLE exams.
Serves as a key liaison between all JABSOM students with the University of Hawaii at Manoa Kokua office, coordinating any accommodations for disabilities with appropriate faculty and staff as needed.
Assists in advising students with disabilities on applying for accommodations on USMLE exams.
Assist in developing and implementing small group-based skills building for students on various academic well-being issues that may arise as students progress through medical school.
Works collaboratively with the academic advisor or learning community mentor, as needed, to develop USMLE preparation plans for individual students.
Scores and interprets assessment results, and completes assessments of students’ learning and study skills, personality styles, and critical-thinking.
Provide general well-being, mental health, and academic counseling/advising and support to individual JABSOM MD program students.
Depending on the situation, appropriately triage student referrals to the following: others within OSA, the UH Manoa Kokua program, UH Manoa Counseling & Student Development Center or additional counseling services, appropriate faculty or leadership within OME (e.g., Course Directors, Learning Community Directors/Mentors), JABSOM or UH Manoa Title IX coordinator, and others as warranted.
Contribute to medical education efforts and research related to educational models that support student academic success and/or well-being and resiliency;
May provide direct support to medical student efforts to enhance health and well-being among the student body through the following efforts: serve as an advisor to the Holistic Health Interest Group, provide wellness check-ins with students with OSA, provide wellness kits for MD3, MD7, and MD8.
Assist with the development and delivery of educational programs on student well-being and mental health support for faculty development.

Education and Professional Work Experience
MD degree or equivalent medical degree from an accredited medical school
Board certification (within 7 years) or qualified to become certified (or the equivalent) is required.
Evidence of effective teaching and remediation, especially with diverse learner populations, including those with different learning abilities.
Actively practicing clinical medicine.
Evidence of effective research, scholarly activity, or clinical administration is required.
Experience in assisting students to identify their learning styles and developing their learning skills
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with students and faculty.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a culturally sensitive manner with people from diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.
Demonstrated ability with program development of academic support (examples could include, but are not limited to individual learning plans, advising, counseling, academic skills building, resiliency skills-building, growth mindset skills-building).
Demonstrated ability to collaboratively help in resolving wide-ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative, and timely manner.
Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external groups, stakeholders, team leaders and members, and individuals; facilitate others in a collaborative, team-based environment.
Demonstrated ability to manage work priorities and projects.
Desirable Qualifications
Completion of a fellowship or advanced degree in medical or health professions education (i.e., M.Ed., MACM, MSEd, or similar).
Familiarity and/or experience with problem-based learning.
Leadership in designing remediation programs for medical learners (medical students or residents).
Skilled in team-building and developing collaborative partnerships.
General experience with continuous quality improvement strategies.
Evidence of scholarly activity/research.
Experience in working with programs that service Indigenous, underrepresented and/or disadvantaged students.
