CONTEXT OF THE JOB:
The mission of the Delaware Geological Survey (DGS) includes
research, exploration and service. Statutory charges include the
following: systematic investigation of the geology of Delaware;
exploration and research pertaining to the water, mineral, and
other earth resources; preparation of reports and maps presenting
its findings; and provision of factual information and advice to
the officials and citizens of Delaware. Under the general direction
of a senior investigator, the Research Associate II will
independently perform basic data collection and applied research in
the hydrogeology of Delaware. The salary for this position is
supported by State, Federal and external grants and sources.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
Conducts multi-disciplinary investigations and monitoring of
groundwater occurrence and use. Independently collects and analyzes
hydrogeologic data from DGS records and other State and Federal
agencies. Independently collects complex scientific data through
on-site acquisition of data and review of existing publications.
Catalogs, queries, and performs routine and ad hoc quality control
checks on the data using the DGS computerized management
information systems. Maintains and works with complex relational
databases and geodatabases for data collection and analysis and
prepares accompanying maps and reports. Analyzes spatial
distribution of data points and performs statistical investigation
of spatial data. Uses and develops computer-aided data logging,
drafting, and geographic information systems software to complete
these duties. Schedules, coordinates, and supervises field crews of
investigators, students, and sub-contractors collecting data on
soils, sediments, aquifer hydraulics, water quality,
hydrostratigraphy, and water levels. Coordinates with investigators
and administrators of other University departments and outside
agencies involved in this and other similar projects to collect and
disseminate data and findings of research and service efforts. In
collaboration with the Principal Investigator, prepares proposals
(grants and contracts) to support research projects and service
efforts. Prepares technical reports and maps for publications,
presentations, and submission to funding agencies. Performs
miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
