CONTEXT OF THE JOB:

Under the general direction of the Director of the Center for Black
Culture (CBC), the Program Coordinator supervises multiple student
staff and provides advisement, coaching, and support to African
American/Black students and student groups and works to build
intra-cultural and cross-cultural relationships through
programming. The incumbent develops and coordinates events and
services that address culture, climate, belonging, and healthy
identity development. The program coordinator facilitates student
learning of university policies, co-curricular resources, effectual
leadership skills, and professional development
opportunities.

The Program Coordinator supports and, in some instances, cultivates
partnerships with a range of university departments/organizations,
off-campus organizations/businesses, and Black alumni to develop
and market academic support services to strengthen the retention,
persistence rates, and quality of life of Black students.

The Program Coordinator is knowledgeable of the unique challenges
Black communities may experience and will contribute to creating
culturally responsive engagement and outreach initiatives that
foster resilience, well-being, inclusion, and achievement for Black
students, faculty and staff, parents/families, and alumni.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Participate in departmental strategic planning and provide
  support to CBC and University-wide equity initiatives.

• Assist with programs and services that support the identity and
  leadership development of current and emerging student leaders,
  emphasizing African American/Black students.
• Identify, coordinate, and market campus and national leadership
  opportunities to students.
• Coordinate large-scale CBC cultural, art, and community
  engagement programs and services, including homecoming, Kwanzaa,
  cultural heritage months, and the Each One Reach One Mentoring
  Program.
• Supervise undergraduate and graduate student employees and
  interns.
• Advise Black students with planning and assessing educational
  and social programs and services. Oversee program development and
  mentor student leaders.
• Engage alumni and provide direct support for annual large-scale
  programs sponsored by CBC affiliated student groups, including the
  Cultural Programming Advisory Board (CPAB), Black Student Union
  (BSU), NPHC, Black Graduate Student Association (BGSA), and others
  as identified.
• Market CBC, community, and associated student group
  programs.
• Meet with students to provide interpersonal and broad
  co-curricular support; coach and mentor students as appropriate and
  provide referrals to university departments/offices, and community
  organizations.
• Inform department leaders of emerging concerns and experiences
  that may adversely impact and appropriately celebrate Black
  communities.
• Participate in departmental, institutional, and national
  professional development opportunities.
• Collaborate with CBC staff, students, university departments
  and community partners to plan event calendars.
• Review and prepare artist contracts to ensure university safety
  and financial compliance for signature by the Director.
• Perform other job-related duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

• A Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree strongly preferred, in
  Higher Education Administration, Student Affairs, Leadership,
  Counseling, Sociology, Black American Studies, or another related
  field is preferred.
• At least two years of related professional experience
• Knowledge of the issues impacting Black communities, locally,
  nationally and on a predominantly white college campus
• Effective organizational skills and the ability to multi-task
  and manage the needs of various campus and community
  constituents
• Ability to develop a program from idea to implementation
• Strong collaboration skills with the ability to build and
  maintain successful partnerships across campus and in the
  community
• A broad understanding of student support programs and
  services
• Ability to engage and motivate students
• Ability to interpret and apply guidelines and procedures
• Effectual interpersonal and communication skills
• Skill in enhancing and building community relations
• Ability to work a flexible schedule, including nights and
  weekends
• Experience with mentoring programs and advising students groups
  is preferred.
• Knowledge and experience using social media outlets
  preferred
• Experience in advertising and marketing events preferred
• Experience with cultural centers preferred
• Knowledge of identity and leadership development theories
  preferred
• Demonstrates an understanding and consideration of the
  differing needs and concerns of individuals with varying
  identities, cultures, and backgrounds.
