The Department of History at the University of Delaware invites
applications for a Continuing Track Assistant Professor position in
the Social Studies Education program to begin on August 16, 2023.
We are seeking applicants with expertise in social studies teaching
whose knowledge and skills will complement and enrich current
program strengths. This nationally accredited program prepares
future social studies educators and provides professional
development opportunities for current social studies educators. The
program emphasizes state and national standards; culturally
relevant and responsive pedagogies; civic engagement; and engaged,
equity-centered community scholarship, instruction, and service.
The program also houses the Delaware chapter of the National
Council for History Education and has successfully obtained
external funding for teacher professional development. Program
faculty actively recruit teacher candidates from underrepresented
groups and partner with community organizations to represent the
histories of Black, Indigenous, Latinx, and other people of
color.
Continuing track faculty have opportunities to pursue research, are
eligible for promotion and sabbaticals, and receive full and

their compensation package.
Responsibilities: As a continuing track faculty member, the
successful candidate will primarily teach undergraduate Social
Studies Education courses; mentor student teachers, oversee student
teaching supervisors, and establish/maintain ties with partner
schools; serve in program administration roles such as preparing
accreditation reports, coordinating student teaching, and advising
majors; and contribute to school/university collaborations and
community partnerships. The candidate is also expected to engage in
some scholarship that will contribute to the Social Studies
Education program and/or the Department of History.
The position carries with it opportunities to engage in other
teaching, committee work, and professional development activities
in accord with individual qualifications and interests, including
teaching undergraduate history courses and collaborating with other
Secondary Education programs and/or the College of Education and
Human Development.
Required Qualifications: The successful candidate must
possess a doctorate in History, Education, or closely related field
by the start date; demonstrate excellence in teaching history,
social studies, or social studies education; engage in scholarship
that will enhance the Social Studies Education program and/or
contribute to the strengths and needs of the Department of History;
and demonstrate commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion and
fostering equity.
Preferred Qualifications: College-level teaching experience
and/or familiarity with equity-oriented social studies teacher
preparation research and practices.
Desired Qualifications: Experience mentoring pre-service or
in-service teachers; knowledge of program accreditation processes
(such as CAEP); experience in teaching either middle or high school
social studies; experience in creating or maintaining partnerships
between the university and schools/communities; and/or experience
in securing external grants.
The College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Delaware
