The Department of Computer Science and Technology (also known as the Computer Laboratory) is an academic department within the University of Cambridge that encompasses Computer Science, along with many aspects of Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. We have a world-wide reputation for academic research with consistently high research ratings, with around 340 academic staff, research associates, and PhD students actively engaged in research projects within the department. Key to our continued success is our ability to attract talented staff and provide them with a stimulating environment that promotes a strong sense of community whilst valuing and recognising individual contribution. We now seek to appoint an Finance Analyst to support the Head of Department with the introduction of the University’s Enhanced Financial Transparency project (EFT), which aims to enable Departments to achieve greater understanding of their finances, and the financial consequence of their plans and decisions. In particular, this role will advise the Head of Department and senior staff in using financial information to develop a financial strategy to help the Department achieve financial sustainability for the future.
As the Department’s Finance Analyst, you will be responsible for developing the Department’s financial strategy and advising senior management on all aspects of department-level strategic financial decision making. You will build and maintain the annual planning forecast, interpret strategic projects and other strategies in financial terms, demonstrating their impact on income and expenditure. In this challenging and exciting role you will have the opportunity to work collaboratively with senior staff to ensure that the Department’s financial plans inform and are consistently integrated with strategic departmental objectives. We will look to you to take responsibility for the implementation of financial strategy, understand University policies for allocating resources and costing new initiatives, and ensure the Department’s financial strategy and policies align with University policies.
You will join us with a chartered accountant qualification, or equivalent level of experience, ideally with experience of leading an accounting/finance team gained in both commercial and Higher Education/Public Sector environments. You will also have experience of communicating financial advice to a wide range of staff who do not work with financial and accounting systems. Key to your success in this role will be the ability to interpret financial information and present to both financial and non-financial contacts,
