United Activities Unlimited Inc. (UAU) is a Staten Island, a community-based non-profit that provides educational, recreational, enrichment, prevention, and workforce development programs and services. UAU was incorporated in 1977 as the result of a community initiative by concerned citizens who responded to the challenge of providing positive alternatives to young people in the wake of the financial crisis of New York City that forced the closing of many of the Board of Education afternoon and evening centers. Since then, UAU has grown from a single recreation center to a borough-wide network of comprehensive programs, services, and community centers, designed to educate, inspire and empower Staten Island children, youth, and adults. Within its Workforce Development division, team members strive for continued personal, professional, and community growth. The Workforce team creates opportunities for local youth and provides culturally competent training and experiences to support their entry to the modern workforce.

POSITION SUMMARY:

We are seeking dynamic Instructors looking for a comprehensive and rewarding experience this Summer, providing instruction to 14-15 year old Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) participants. As an Instructor, you will implement a virtual, project-based learning experience that will provide enriching career exploration, emphasize work-readiness, help foster leadership, and develop numerous skills. This virtual learning opportunity will take place for 10-15 hours per week for six weeks from July through August. Selected SYEP Instructors will be under the direct supervision of an SYEP Education Specialist and will be responsible for providing an appropriately safe, caring, and enriching environment for youth enrolled in United Activities Unlimited (UAU) programming. The SYEP Instructor is responsible for conducting themselves in an appropriate manner, setting the example for participants, parents, and co-workers by reflecting the core values of UAU: caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility. The SYEP Education Coordinator is responsible for complying with all standards set by United Activities Unlimited. Instructors selected are expected to possess a deep interest and passion for youth development and achievement, and demonstrate an interest in and ability to facilitate content around current events and civic issues. Candidates familiar with personal, demographic, and cultural barriers related to youth employment are encouraged to apply. The selected Instructors would ideally utilize this understanding to create successful youth engagement, teachable moments, and lasting rapport with SYEP participants. Experience working with diverse populations and ESL students is a plus.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND JOB DUTIES:

• Coordinates and implements a virtual, project-based learning experience for six weeks during the months of July and August. (Curriculum will be provided)

• Supervises participants and leads online discussions of the course material via Zoom and Google Classroom

• Engages with participants through a virtual platform and shares clear instructions on projects, assignments, and learning objectives

• Plans participant learning and individual achievements based on long- and short-term goals, and program objectives

• Conducts activities for a balanced program of instruction, presentation, and work time that provides youth with opportunities to observe, question, investigate, and act.

• Establishes a cooperative relationship with all assigned participants by being accessible to participants through email, phone, and Google Classroom and being responsive within 24 hours

• Actively facilitates course discussions, ensuring that all participants are participating and interacting with one another; identifies and navigates opportunities to shape meaningful and critical discussion, call attention to other approaches, and answer specific questions raised by youth

• Encourages complex thinking and responds to any questions or concerns participants may have

• Records participation and attendance of participants according to guidelines presented by DYCD and UAU Administrative team, along with completion of pre-program, mid-program, and post-program evaluation surveys

• Identifies available guest speaker and partnership opportunities, made available by the SYEP Outreach Team, that are relevant and appropriate to the work of the cohort, and coordinates attendance, participation, and debriefing

• Meets professional obligations through efficient work habits such as meeting deadlines, honoring schedules, and coordinating resources and meetings in an effective and timely manner

• Reports back daily to the SYEP Education Specialist, giving clear objective goals for the cohort and feedback.

• Meets regular attendance requirements

• Attend team meetings, training sessions, and professional development opportunities as directed by the Education Specialist and/or SYEP Education Coordinator

• Consistently reflects on self, content, and instructional practices, to achieve programmatic goals

• Participate in end-of-program/post-program debrief and evaluation activities

• Assists with any other departmental duties and projects as needed

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

• Demonstrates operational knowledge and proficiency of remote work/remote learning technology, including Zoom, Google Meets, Google Classroom, and the Internet

• Ability to engage, motivate, and guide youth in the completion of an inquiry-driven project

• Ability to engage and teach youth job readiness skills, including development of transferable skills and the ability to reflect on their application

• Demonstrates flexibility and a fluency for adapting to meet the needs of participants

• Strong communication skills

• Comfortable working in a dynamic environment

• Demonstrates ability to work and meet deadlines independently while contributing to a collaborative team effort

• Demonstrates understanding and value of individuals’ different capacities, cultures, and abilities

• Possesses a high level of emotional intelligence and ability to thoughtfully and accurately assess and respond to individual needs

• Respect for diverse racial, socio-economic, ethnic, academic, religious, and cultural backgrounds and identities

• Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a commitment to and passion for UAU’s mission

• Master’s Degree, Bachelors Degree, or Experience with Youth Development Preferred

• NYS certification or license in Education or relevant field, Preferred

Contract Terms

• Employment will terminate upon the conclusion of the SYEP 2021 Program contract year, on or about the end of August 2021.

Pay: $25.00 – $37.00 per hour
