Teaching, Advising, Curriculum and Instructional Development – Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to teaching may include but are not limited to: subject matter competence, course design, course presentation, advising and consultation, directing student research, curriculum and instructional development, and grading student work.

Scholarly Research, Creative, and Other Professional Activities – All tenured and tenure-track faculty are expected to participate in expanding the knowledge base of her/his academic field by conducting research or engaging in other creative activities as appropriate to the faculty member’s discipline. Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to research may include but are not limited to: research/creative activity that generates new knowledge and/or synthesizes and/or integrates existing knowledge, publication, an on-going agenda for research, scholarly, and creative activity, and are expected to seek extramural support for their work.

Service to University, the Public, and the Profession – All tenured and tenure-track faculty are expected to engage in a program of service appropriate to their discipline. Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to service may include but are not limited to: service to the administration and governance of the University, public service, and service to the profession.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Spangler Distinguished Professor of Early Child Literacy will maintain scholarly productivity in research; seek external funds to support research activities; teach undergraduate students with an opportunity to teach graduate courses (face-to-face, hybrid and online); mentor faculty; provide service to the field and profession; and participate in programmatic development of the college and literacy initiatives at the institution, local, state, national, and international levels.

Minimum Experience/Education

UNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned doctorate or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline.

Preferred Education, Skills and Experience

Qualifications include a doctoral degree from an accredited institution, an excellent research record, effective professional experience, commitment to diversity in programs and people, and experience in leadership in some capacity.

Some administrative experience is desired but not necessary. Other desired qualifications include success in securing external funding, leadership in tenure and promotional review, and outreach to schools and other educational partners.

In addition to the above, the following criteria apply:
The Spangler Distinguished Professor will conduct research in early literacy to advance the field and establish a strong presence for the Cato College in the state and nation as a leader in reading instruction. Candidates must have an established record of securing external funding, and an extensive record of research productivity in early literacy.

The appointee will teach at least one course annually in the Cato College’s teacher preparation programs, with the opportunity to teach graduate and doctoral-level courses. The appointee will demonstrate a commitment to mentoring doctoral students and faculty.

In alignment with North Carolina’s goals for early literacy, the appointee will work with school, district, and state-level leaders in university/school partnerships to design and deliver high-quality professional development for in-service teachers that will significantly enhance the capacity of schools to employ evidence-based practices in reading instruction with fidelity.

The appointee will be expected to engage in collaboration with other educator preparation programs as a community of literacy champions to share effective, evidence-based literacy practices for teacher candidates across the state.

Candidates must have an earned doctorate in Elementary Education, Reading/Literacy, Special Education, or a closely related field from an accredited university and currently hold a faculty rank of Associate Professor or Full Professor.
