The VP, Engineering will work as part of the OBU Senior Leadership Team to ensure the leadership and culture enabling the organization to exceed its goals.
Leadership and management of the Engineers department based in the UK, Canada and the staff working on Sonar projects in Australia. Coordinate the related engineering activities such as training, processes, and tools of the OBU within both the SBU and the broader Group.
Overall responsibility for providing technical oversight of customer and IRAD programs including the review and assessment of technical project performance.
Overall responsibility for all product safety and airworthiness related activities, including sign off of all Design Certificates and regulatory and legislative compliance
Overall responsibility for engineering cost and risk estimation for bids
Overall responsibility for ensuring appropriate personnel are available to work on customer funded projects, on internally funded projects such as IRAD and B&P initiatives, on overhead-funded change initiatives and other emerging needs, plus other planned activities as necessary, balancing overall priority of different requests
Talent management and development of engineering personnel including hiring, retention, performance feedback, mentoring, talent management, career and development planning.
Identify, develop, and implement new or appropriate process and procedure improvements, to meet current and emergent engineering requirements in line with the Group and SBU initiatives as well as engineering best practice.
Ensure the provision of the required engineering tools and equipment in support of the foregoing processes again in line with the Group and SBU initiatives as well as engineering best practice.
Work with Operations to develop and improve a streamlined process for Engineering to Manufacturing handover of new/updated products, ensuring that Design for Manufacturing principles are established and maintained.
Responsible for the department budget in excess of £15M.
Support and provide input to the annual OBU budgeting process for all facets of engineering including tools, training, continuous improvement, recruiting/retention, etc.
Provide input to the CTO for technology roadmap development.
Contribute to the development of the Sonar OBU and Maritime SBU vision and strategic plan.
Promulgate Ultra and the Maritime vision, strategies, goals and initiatives throughout the OBU and ensure the strategic alignment of OBU strategies.
Ensure that the OBU adheres to the Group Operating Manual and other Group processes and guidelines.
Uphold, safeguard and promote Ultra’s values and philosophy, particularly concerning accountability, ethics, integrity, security regulations, and corporate responsibility in accordance with company guidelines.
Promoting positive behaviors, ASPIRE values and positive vision of the company to the team.
Any other duties as and when required.
Experience of leading large, multi-discipline technical teams or departments.
Working knowledge of a broad range of engineering function (Mechanical, Electrical, Acoustic, Systems,
Software Engineering), preferably in the defence sector.
Extensive experience working with relevant military customers and government contracting organizations.
Ability to obtain a government secret security clearance in country of residence.
Frequent national and international travel.
Used to dealing with a wide range of stakeholders and senior management.
Experience across the whole project lifecycle, from bids and proposals through to in-service support.
Experience of managing an international team.
Bachelor’s degree in STEM or closely related field; graduate degree an asset.
Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability leading collaborative groups with ability to provide clear and concise and feedback.
Track record of enhancing engineering team engagement and enabling.
Proven track record of delivering complex engineering projects.
Track record of managing / operating in a multi-geography, multi-cultural environments
Use of standard office tools and experience of engineering tools such as DOORS, UML tools, ERPs and Configuration Management tools.
