Opening statement

The UK Hydrographic Office is a leading centre for hydrography, providing marine geospatial data to inform maritime decisions. We work with a wide range of data suppliers and partners to support maritime navigation, safety, security and marine development around the UK and worldwide.

Short Summary

As a Graduate software developer, you’ll work in a small delivery team creating solutions for the cloud. If you have experience with Java, C# or other similar object orientated language and you have a passion for learning new technologies, we’d love to hear from you.

You’ll be joining a software development practice of 50 people. We’re proud that we’ve created this group by recruiting junior people who share a commitment to professional development and watched them grow with us. Right now, we have people pursuing certification in Azure, AWS, Kubernetes and Security; we have others on management training courses; we even have people on Masters Degree programmes.

Everything we do is team based. We take Agile seriously; your delivery team will be small but will have the people it needs to get things done – developers, testers, product owner and a delivery manager – as well as access to infrastructure specialists, UX experts and analysts.

Quality is paramount. You and your team will be supported to do good work. Most code is done in pairs or larger groups to ensure quality and spread knowledge. Everyone reviews code and everyone welcomes feedback.

We strive to automate as much as possible: testing, builds, deployments use the latest tools available

Responsibilities

We work in wide range of technologies, coding in Java, .Net and other languages, deploying our solutions to Azure and AWS as well as to our own infrastructure. We also use geospatial technologies such as ArcGIS.

Our teams are currently:

• building Azure geospatial data APIs to reach new types of customer;
• changing the way our data is stored with a new cloud native data platform using Kubernetes;
• re-writing the way our products are updated using Azure Event Grid, .Net and Docker.

Specific Technical/Functional Skills and Experience

• A Bachelor’s or higher degree in a Maths, Science, Engineering or Computing subject (or expecting results in 2022)

• At least 1 years’ experience of coding in an object-oriented language, in a commercial, academic or hobby environment.

• This role is open to full time, part time, job share. The UKHO will consider flexible working or workplace adjustments, where appropriate.

• Demonstrate a basic understanding of .Net or Java and object orientated concepts. This will be several interview questions and may comprise of a 1-hour online coding test

With regards to maternity, adoption, and/or shared parental leave the flexibility to have up to 26 weeks full pay, followed by 13 weeks statutory pay and a further 13 weeks unpaid leave. Paternity leave of up to two weeks is available with full pay, subject to certain qualifying criteria.
