Job Description*
Who are we looking for?*
We are looking for a year in Industry Placement Student to work within the CODAS & IT department. You will be passionate about learning new technologies and addressing key scientific challenges.
Our year in industry placements will provide experience working on real software engineering projects, designing, developing, and maintaining software and data systems that are provided by the Control and Data Acquisition System (CODAS) & IT department.
To be successful you will have excellent analytical skills as well as good communication and influencing skills. This is an exciting opportunity to work within a team as well as external partners within CODAS and be responsible for contributing to finding new ways of working for the better future of the business.
What will you be responsible for?

• Assisting with design and development of software for data access and visualization
• Assisting with design and development of machine control systems.
• Enable the use of developer tools within CODAS & IT
• Contribute to exploratory work for new projects/features
• Providing user support for software and scientific computing

Qualifications*
Essential skills, experience and competence required*

• Experience of programming in both a compiled and interpreted language with attention to code clarity
• Knowledge of some programming paradigms (eg object orientated, functional) and design principles
• Ability to use good software engineering practices such as version control and testing
• Basic experience with Windows and Linux/Unix operating systems
• Studying for an undergraduate degree in computer science or software engineering or similar (including joint honours with other STEM subjects) with an industrial placement year

Desirable skills, experience and competence

• Experience with our core languages: Python, C, C++ or IDL
• Experience of web development
• Knowledge of databases and SQL
• Knowledge of control systems or data acquisition
