Job Description
Who are we looking for?
The Head of Central Computing at UKAEA manages UKAEA’s Central Computing Unit within the CODAS & IT Department. The Department is responsible for the centrally managed IT Services and infrastructure. This includes data networks, desktop computing, filesystems, UNIX, Linux and Windows server systems and JET data acquisition and storage tools. It also provides helpdesk support and operational management of UKAEA computer rooms.
What will you be responsible for?
Provide strategic leadership for UKAEA IT architecture and in particular compute, network, storage and identity & access management platforms
Maintain operation of key IT systems within reasonable performance boundaries, preferably laid out in documented service level descriptions
Lead on governance of Central Computing platforms, including setting policy and ensuring compliance from across the organisation.
Manage the capability of the group members, ensure employees are developed and succession planning is in place
Responsible for identifying options for enhancing the capabilities of the CODAS&IT central computing systems
Information Technology Security Officer (ITSO) – provide suitable systems and services to maintain the appropriate level of confidentiality, integrity and availability for UKAEA information asset
Manage and mitigate risks assigned from the CODAS&IT risk register and ensure appropriate Business Continuity ad Disaster Recovery plans are in place and fully tested.
Provide leadership and effective management of large IT projects that are complex, high-risk and/or expensive.
Maintain and enhance the quality of IT user support services and help/awareness information for UKAEA IT services.
Liaise with external collaborators and EIROforum members to ensure the IT service provided by CODAS&IT is in line with external users’ expectations and requirements.
Oversee and participate in the design, implementation, testing, operation and maintenance of the CODAS&IT central computing software and hardware
Qualifications
Essential skills, experience and competence required
An experienced leader with extensive line management experience.
Experience with control and data acquisition systems for large physics experiments or large industrial plant.
Experience in specifying, placing and monitoring contracts with suppliers.
A working knowledge of Linux, Windows and Solaris operating systems.
A working knowledge of networking remote computer access methods, commercial and open source, and hence IT security issues.
Experience of video conferencing and hybrid working systems.
A relevant Professional qualification and relevant experience in research or industry.
Desirable skills, experience and competence
Ability to organise, motivate and direct an international staff with many differing skills.
Ability to establish relationships with other Departments and Groups, industry, associated laboratories and other external groups.
Certifications/accreditations in ITIL, DevOps, Cyber Security and Project Management
