Uhuru Shule Cooperative is an African Centered Parent-led Cooperative. We named our Cooperative Uhuru – which is Swahili for freedom because it represents our vision and education philosophy. Our vision at our Uhuru Shule (Freedom School) is to foster the development of well-rounded, liberation-minded, proud African American young men and women. Our curriculum is personalized and student-centered without the barrier of grade limits – academic acceleration is one of our goals.

We believe our children are the future and as such, we owe it to them to actively instill a strong sense of pride fueled by knowledge of their history unfiltered by bias – unconscious or not.

Essential Functions: Responsible for instructional planning, including, but not limited to, providing written lesson plans and preparation in accordance with the objectives of the instructional program, establishing positive learning expectation standards for all students; evaluating students’ progress and maintaining current and accurate records of students’ achievements; and establishes and maintains reasonable rules of conduct within the classroom and external educational environments. The teacher will be provided with support, curriculum materials, and a student environment.

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor degree and experience working with students in a homeschool or elementary school setting.

Preferred Qualifications: Successful completion of all student teaching requirements as well as course work to obtain the appropriate teaching certificate(s) and/or a valid teaching license issued by the Illinois State Board of Education (e.g., Professional Educator License (PEL), Educator License with Stipulations (ELS) or a Substitute License).

Schedule: Hours and days can be flexible; ideal schedule Monday – Friday for at least three hours per day.

Pay: $25.00 – $40.00 per hour
