The Opportunity

Transgrid is experiencing unprecedented times in delivering major transmission infrastructure projects along Australia’s eastern seaboard, to secure the electricity supply and boost sharing across States. New interconnectors will improve supply reliability as ageing coal-fired generation is retired and increase customer access to cheaper, cleaner electricity from renewable generators as energy storage becomes critical.

The Cost Controller is responsible for ensuring the integrity of financial information in the cost management system/s and be able to identify issues, implement business solutions and contribute to the continuous improvement of financial operating and transaction processes associated with these $1bn+ projects.

These positions will also be responsible for the development of the VNI West and Sydney Ring Major Project Program of works by: implementation of the systems required to support financial management best practice delivery; producing financial reports; managing project risks and assisting the project team in extracting and analysing financial information.

Reporting to the Commercial Manager – Finance and Project Controls, the Cost Controllers will closely work with the work stream leads (Project Development, Engineering, Community & Stakeholder Engagement, Procurement, Finance, Property and Environmental) to develop and maintain all project financial requirements and to ensure health and successful delivery of these major projects and to drive satisfactory cost, resource and project control management outcomes.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Undertake timely and accurate reconciliations, accruals and analysis of financial transactions to ensure integrity of financial data associated with the project.
• Identify and analyse issues to determine their cause and develop and communicate appropriate business solutions to address and overcome these issues.
• Identify and implement continuous improvements in finance operational and transaction processes to align to best practice and generate efficiencies in a shared services environment.
• Provide advice and assistance with extracting financial information, creating meaningful reports and analysing financial information.
• Preparation of ad-hoc financial reports for management’s decision-making purposes as and when required.
• Assist with the financial month-end close activities to effectively meet relevant deadlines for management reporting.

Skills & Experience

• Tertiary or equivalent qualifications in Commerce, Finance, Engineering or a related discipline with evidence of continued studies to maintain and enhance skills and relevant experience.
• Membership or working towards membership of the Australian Society of Certified Practicing Accountants or Institute of Chartered Accountants or similar organisation.
• Demonstrated analytical skills with ability to draw and interpret relevant consistent data from multiple sources and presenting information in clear concise reports.
• Sound financial and project accounting work experience for a large corporation or utility.
• Understanding of the regulatory and accounting framework and business environment.
• Understanding of financial transaction workflows within the financial system.
• Experience in undertaking business performance and process improvements.
• Excellent communication and inter-personal skills.
• Customer focus with strong relationship building skills.
• Time management skills to address any conflicting priorities and meet deadlines.
• Knowledge or ability to learn the use of corporate financial systems and software applications.
• Knowledge and understanding or agreement to learn the relevant Transgrid policies and procedures.
• High level proven stakeholder management, negotiation, interpersonal and communication skills.
• Strong financial acumen, and excellent analytical and problem solving skills.
• Strong experience in Project Controls Management systems and tools.
• Very strong reporting and analytics, and MS Office skills (especially in Excel).
• Experience in Power-BI (or similar tools) for designing reports and performing analysis is an advantage.
• Prior exposure to or use of Primavera, Microsoft project, SAP or Maximo would be an added advantage.
