Is your passion platform engineering? Are you itching to envision and build the core services that underpin all Thomson Reuters’ (TR) products? Then we want you on our Toronto-based team! This role is in the Shared Capabilities organization where we build, and set the direction for, the foundational services that power Thomson Reuters’ products.
Shared Capabilities focuses on enabling technologies that help Thomson Reuters deliver digital products to our customers. Our mission is to build a durable competitive advantage for TR by providing “building blocks” that get value to market faster. As an example, we manage TR’s Customer Identity capability.
As a Software Engineering Manager on the Design System team, you’ll work closely with designers, architects, software engineers, content strategists, accessibility specialists, and researchers to develop, grow, and maintain our global design system. Come join a group of passionate design professionals, who are focused on growing and scaling an organization-wide world-class platform.
About the Role
This role is within the Shared Capabilities’ Design System team, which focuses on the engineering aspects of the Design System. In this opportunity as Software Development Manager you will:
Build and manage a team of approximately 8 software engineers and 1 architect.
Technology Strategy for Front-end Architecture – Provide thought leadership and guidance in setting the vision for front-end architecture, eventually covering a landscape with 100s of products. Collaborate and drive alignment with these other organizations within TR: Business Architecture, Enterprise Architecture, Information Security and Risk Management, Corporate Strategy, and others.
Create and build – Lead a front-end engineering team and advocate for responsive UI design methodology and processes (user-centered and iterative design). Help the team to translate design language into a reusable code library, create scalable and accessible components. Document the design system and help communicate with product engineering teams.
Be part of a collaborative team: Work closely with the UX Designers, Accessibility Specialists, Content Strategists, UX Researchers, Software Engineering and Architects in a collaborative team-oriented environment to lead the project from a software architecture perspective, and create new components and tools to be used across our entire organization. Advocate for the consumers of the Design System (product engineering teams) while developing features that align with the needs of the end-user.
Be an Effective Communicator: Share ideas, participate in peer reviews, and exhibit strong listening skills. You justify and articulate engineering decisions during design reviews. You lead brainstorming sessions with product teams and can share outcomes using your excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Be Curious & Innovative: Continuously update yourself with next-generation user experiences, technology, and contribute to process development practices. Turn user research and usability feedback into easy-to-use solutions. Gather, analyze, and synthesize UX & technology needs for complex product and user requirements.
Enterprise Technical Evangelism – Work with the architecture council and across the architecture community at TR. This is both a “push” (promoting the Design System capability) and a “pull” (What new capabilities would have the most value? What adoption barriers exist?).
At the end of the day, we are looking for individuals who will enable Thomson Reuters to think big, make it simple, and move fast.
