So he began revitalizing the old town: he restored a historic hotel, brought the Medora Musical to town, and so much more.

It was 1986 when the Schafer family, with Harold ready to retire from business, donated all they’d created in Medora to establish the non-profit Theodore Roosevelt Medora Foundation.

In the years since, we’ve grown from a staff of a handful of folks to more than 50 full-time employees, with hundreds more seasonal workers and over 650 volunteers. We’ve awarded hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of scholarships to our staff. The Medora Musical has earned the attention of The New York Times. And we’ve earned a reputation as the #1 tourism and hospitality provider in North Dakota.

This Position:

The Retail and Inventory Associate’s job varies during the year, as TRMF retail stores are largely seasonal. During the summer season the Associate is responsible for leading a team of employees in an assigned retail store location. The Associate must create a positive work environment and propel their employees to work hard and deliver great customer service. Their store location must be kept clean, safe, and properly stocked at all times.  

They will need to be able to easily engage with guests and promote store sales in addition to being experts on the happenings in Medora and promoting sales to shows, events, and activities around town.

The Retail and Inventory Associate will need to be competent in several software systems. They will frequently need to assist their staff by troubleshooting software issues and determining how to solve them.

Off-season work for the Associate includes assisting with physical inventories, moving inventory between store locations, unpacking, inspecting, and sorting freight, data input, pricing, merchandising, and training and supervising volunteers. They also will assist in staffing stores during off-season business hours.

The Retail and Inventory Associate must possess excellent oral communication skills, be detail oriented, be comfortable and proficient working with various software programs, enjoy and be able to easily interact with others, and have creative problem-solving abilities.

Duties/Responsibilities

• Supervise staff and volunteers
• Train incoming employees and volunteers
• Deliver excellent customer service
• Become familiar with products to promote sales 
• Be highly competent and comfortable with computers 
• Attend weekly departmental meetings and safety training
• Monitor inventory levels and report observations to Retail Managers
• Assist the Retail Managers with disseminating information to the retail staff
• Ensure that the store is kept clean and organized by dusting, vacuuming, mopping, washing windows and doors and straightening merchandise 
• Promote Medora shows, events, and activities and provide accurate information
• Enforce procedures and policies with team and guests in difficult situations 
• Actively communicate with Retail Managers to identify and solve problems as well as keep up to date on progress and needs
• Frequently move inventory between store locations
• Unpack, inspect, count, and sort freight
• Data entry
• Pricing
• Organizing backstock in storage locations
• Merchandising
