Course Overview: Bully Pulpit is a nationally acclaimed 18-hole, par 72 daily fee golf course designed by Dr. Michael Hurdzan. We are located on the I-94 corridor in the Scenic and historic Badlands of North Dakota along the Little Missouri River, just 3 miles south of Historic Medora, ND. The golf course measures 7,166 yards from the Championship tees, but has four other sets to choose from. Greens are grassed with Seaside II creeping bentgrass, and the tees, fairways, and roughs are mixture of Kentucky Blues and Fine Fescues. Modern equipment fleet of Toro and John Deere units.
Summary/Objective
Under the supervision of the General Manager, the Superintendent is responsible for directing, coordinating and overseeing the day-to-day Bully Pulpit Golf Course maintenance operations and personnel, focusing on ensuring the best possible playing conditions, personnel and fiscal management while promoting and exhibiting World Class Guest Service to all the Bully Pulpit guests.
Duties/Responsibilities
Provides agronomic direction to maintain the golf course at the highest quality possible at all times.
Plans, organizes and directs the maintenance and construction of putting greens, tees, fairways, roughs, and bunkers.
Supervise all planting, fertilizing and care of turf, plants, shrubs, and trees on the golf course and grounds. Assist with the development and implementation of fertilizer, aeration and pest management program for proper turf grass and plant care.
Ability to identify turf grass and landscape weeds and recommend treatment.
Supervise course construction, renovation and/or reconstruction whether performed by maintenance staff or outside contractors.
Conducts course inspections to ensure the best possible and safe playing conditions.
Coordinates driving range maintenance with the General Manager and Head Golf Professional.
Prepares and maintains the annual golf course maintenance budget and capital plans.
Procures supplies and materials within budgetary limitations.
Keeps record of annual maintenance activities and costs.
Implements sound purchasing procedures utilizing preferred vendors, when possible.
Supervise equipment maintenance and repair operations. Establish and implement a cleaning and preventive maintenance program for appropriate equipment, tools, vehicles, etc.
Coordinate irrigation programs on a daily basis with irrigation technicians. Must have a working knowledge of irrigation pump stations, computer control systems, satellites and automatic heads and design.
Collaboration with Assistant Superintendent(s) on course priorities.
Works closely with, advises, and coordinates with the Head Golf Pro on any issues related to golf course maintenance and to discuss activities, forecasts, goals, plans and customer input.
Works closely with General Manager and Head Golf Pro to operate the Golf Course in a fiscally responsible and professional manner.
Coordinate record keeping for the course including chemical applications, fertilizer applications, MSDS sheets, soil and tissue sampling.
Assures that effective orientation and training are given to each new full-time and seasonal employee.
Establish employee training programs with appropriate documentation including, mowing schedules and proper mowing practices, course set up for play, proper chemical and fertilizer applications, computer irrigation systems, pump station protocol.
Ensures all TRMF policies and procedures are followed.
Ensures proper mixing, calibration and application of all chemical/fertilizers use on the course.
Ensures an open and welcoming atmosphere that promotes skill enhancement and overall safety.
Ensures staff is working within OSHA, club safety, state and federal guidelines for safe working conditions.
Schedules and plans shift schedules, calendars, communicates departmental and organizational goals, and identifies opportunities for improvement.
Maintains a skilled, trained and motivated staff through continuous communication, feedback and effective training. Ensure that staff obtain proper training and/or licenses needed to perform job tasks safely and within regulations.
Be available after hours in event of an emergency.
Maintain knowledge of current and projected industry developments through continuous attention to industry periodicals and participation in relevant trade associations and organizations.
Perform other related duties as necessary or assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Manages the departments personnel that may include, but is not limited to; Assistant Superintendent, Equipment Technician, Irrigation Technician, Grounds Crew.
Hires and trains golf course grounds staff.
Schedules, organizes, and assigns projects to members of the golf course grounds team.
Conducts performance evaluations that are timely and constructive.
Handle discipline and termination of employees as needed in accordance with TRMF policy.
Required Skills/Abilities
Must be familiar with proper and correct techniques to safely operate equipment and safely apply chemicals per manufactures specifications.
Excellent oral and written communication skills, as well as, a high degree of leadership qualities, administrative and executive ability, especially in terms of problem solving and decision-making.
Ability to interact professionally and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, co-workers and subordinates.
Must be able to multi-task in a fast paced environment.
Ability to lead and teach others.
Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or similar software.
Required Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent from a two-year College or technical school; and two to five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience (degree preference in agronomy, horticulture, plant/soil science).
Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GSCAA) member.
Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
Five (5) years of Golf Course Superintendent Experience preferred.
Five (5) years automate irrigation systems experience preferred.
Possesses Pesticide License or able to obtain within 90 days of hire.
Up-to-date knowledge of latest golf course tools, technologies, and best practices.
Participating knowledge of the game of golf.
Thorough knowledge of the construction, establishment, and maintenance practices employed on golf course putting greens, tee, fairways, roughs, and bunkers; planting, cultivation, and pruning of ornamental plants, shrubs, and trees; the characteristics and proper use of various fertilizers and soil conditions; pesticide control method and materials; drainage methods; and watering practices and irrigation systems, including wells, pumps, and automatic controls.
Knowledge off construction and maintenance of the maintenance facility, restrooms, fences, bridges, golf cart paths, service roads, parking lots, ponds and streams.
Experience in controlling department budget.
Previous club experience preferred
Work Environment
Work hours may include days and evenings on weekdays and weekends. Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions. May be exposed to inclement weather, potentially dangerous chemicals, solvents, pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, misdirected golf balls, sharp and rapid equipment movement on a daily basis. Injury or sickness may result if safety policies and practices are not properly followed.
