LaPorte County Family YMCA Facts
On December 9, 1908, a group of La Porte citizens met to establish the YMCA of La Porte. With their hard work and dedication, on May 4, 1909, our YMCA was officially chartered. Within months of this first meeting the group decided to build a permanent structure to cost no less than $65,000. It took only 10 days for the community to raise 80 percent of the funds – a record campaign for the city of La Porte.
This was the beginning of our community’s long-term commitment to and support of our YMCA. From that beginning La Porte has continually supported us by sharing time, talent and treasure to make our YMCA the strong, viable organization it is today boasting 7,925 members.
In the last 15 years we opened a branch in Long Beach, created our own 8 ½ acre Outdoor Sports and Recreation Center, developed collaborations to support before and after school programs in several schools in our county, provided early learning opportunities, started a Summer Kids Camp and opened a branch in Michigan City when the Michigan City Area Schools were no longer using 220,000 square feet of a sports and recreation complex. These programs were done while maintaining a positive cash flow and budget surpluses.
In the last 3 years, our Y is one of only two YMCAs in Indiana (other being Indianapolis) that have successfully developed all of the Y-USA Chronic Disease Programs and is about to become HIPAA compliant for billing Medicare and Medicaid.
During the past 2 years, our Board and CEO have been working with our Y-USA Regional Director and a professional fund development group to create a plan for building a new La Porte branch knowing that we have outgrown our current building and facilities. We believe that the La Porte County Family YMCA is in a unique position to be a key partner in our county’s quest to develop programs that successfully fight the chronic issues of obesity, opioids, alcohol, smoking and other health related problems and we are seeking significant partners in developing financial support for a new building.
