The Team

Research IT provides research-focussed, specialist computing infrastructure, software engineering, data science, application support and training to researchers across a wide range of domains, who have diverse technical requirements. The Research Software Engineering team within Research IT is responsible for providing a range of software engineering services including engineering, consultancy, and training. Research IT comprise a friendly, open, inclusive, and diverse group of skilled people within a passion for helping others and delivering world-class research.

The Role

As a member of the Research IT software engineering team, you will be responsible for carrying out end-to-end software engineering within Research IT and the University’s research community. You will work on multiple projects, from weeks to months in duration, from conception to completion, getting to the heart of some of the world’s most important challenges and applying cutting-edge knowledge through software. This may involve gathering requirements, designing, building, testing, deploying, documenting, and maintaining software in a wide range of domains. Recent projects within the team include brain scan analysis for stroke research, modelling river deltas, workflow development for a major cancer research trial, visualisations to aid COVID triage, text mining old Arabic texts, and providing an interface to a new optometric device.

In addition to the above, one of the roles offered will require the successful candidate to spend part of their time assigned to the Application Support and Training Team. This team provide specialist support and advice to researchers through the triage and handling of research-related IT queries, and the development and delivery of training courses from introductory to advanced levels.

The Person

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate:

• A sound understanding of the engineering design process and knowledge of the complete software lifecycle.
• Knowledge of software engineering tools, techniques and processes (e.g. project management, version control, debugging and testing).
• Excellent communication skills and a passion for supporting researchers.
• A passion for delivering software engineering excellence and delivering high-quality customer service.
• Experience of scientific computing, data science, web development, mobile app development or high-performance computing.
• Proficiency in one or more programming languages including, but not limited to, Ruby, MATLAB, Python, R, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript or Fortran.
• Experience of developing and delivering training material to a range of audiences.
