The Refugee and Migrant Centre (RMC) is an established, multi award winning charity that provides a safe, welcoming environment to thousands of refugees and migrants living in the Black Country and Birmingham.
Our highly skilled and diverse staff team provide a broad range of services including advice and support on immigration (OISC regulated level 1, 2 & 3), employment, welfare, education, ESOL, housing, homelessness, destitution, citizenship, health and wellbeing.
RMC have been assisting beneficiaries to access and sustain appropriate accommodation and improve their housing and living conditions for nearly two decades. RMC also deals with many aspects of homelessness, destitution, rough sleeping,exploitation,etc.

What you’ll be doing:
RMC are looking to appoint an Education support officer to work with Families that have recently moved to the UK. The aim of the role is to ensure all the family are accessing education to aid their development and integration in the UK, therefore a sound understanding of the Education systems in the UK (pre-school, compulsory education and 19+) is required, and individual advice and guidance is a key component of the role.
The successful candidate will have a willingness to deliver 1-1 sessions to the most disengaged people with a view to encourage them to take up education offers with in RMC, the community or College etc.
Learning for all the family is a key priority and ensuring parents are supporting their children’s education is also a main priority of the job, this could be checking in to make sure people are regularly reading with their children and completing homework etc. were this isn’t happening offering support (possibly in the home) will be needed as well as explaining to parents the importance of supporting their children. This will also include the promotion and active encouragement of participating in pre-school education and childcare for the benefit of the child but also to enable the parent to participant in learning their self.
Main tasks
Adults:
· Promote Adult Education Options to people and encourage people to take up options available to them.
· Deliver 1-1 interventions with people not accessing Education (19+) to build confidence and study skills to enable them to access community and accredited options, this could be within the centre or the clients own home.
· Promoting the take up of childcare options to reduce barriers to learning.
· Arranging and taking people to Education settings to remove barriers to attendance.
· Give advice and guidance on the education system in the UK for adult learning, planning for future learning to gain qualifications, skills and improve their own career options.
Family:
· Ensure families understand the importance of regular attendance at school and the implications on not attending school
· Promote the use of free childcare options to enable adults to access education but also aid the development of younger children
· Support and aid parent’s in support their child’s education by ensuring children receive help with homework, reading at home on a regular basis etc. Delivering support session in the home if required to install this ethos.
General
· Working closely with Resettlement caseworkers and ESOL coordinator at RMC to identify and plan how to support families and individuals
· Updating and adding detailed case notes to client files
· Completing individual actions plans and logs
· A commitment to lifelong learning and its benefits to people
Person Specification
Experience and Skills
Desirable
A teaching qualification would be advantageous or working towards one, but support with preparing sessions to deliver in the home etc. can be provided
Confident to deliver 1-1 session to people in their own homes to build confidence and study skills to enable them to access Education programmes in the community or in College etc.
Essential
A sound understanding of Education in the UK, the eligibility of people to access Adult learning (19+) and for children (0-18)
Give Information, Advice and Guidance to people about lifelong learning, accessing education in the UK and how to progress through levels etc.
Be confident to support parents in supporting their children’s education, including direct interventions in delivering support and guidance in the home.
Excellent written skills and the ability to update and create actions plans etc.
