The Professional Association of Foreign Service Officers is Looking for Assistant to the Editor Full Time

PURPOSE OF POSITION
The Professional Association of Foreign Service Officers (PAFSO) is looking for a graduate or senior undergraduate student to work as Assistant to the Editor in Chief of its flagship magazine, bout de papier.

The key role of the Assistant to the Editor is to identify and secure sources for potential articles to appear in the magazine.

The ideal candidate is a self-starter with excellent editing skills and a strong and demonstrated interest in journalism, foreign policy, and international affairs. Excellent written communications skills in either English or French are essential, and bilingualism is an asset. PAFSO welcomes expression of interest from qualified members of equity-seeking groups.

DETAILS
Duties
The position will report to the Editor in Chief of bout de papier to identify and secure sources of articles that will be published in the magazine. Duties include:

• building a network of contributors such as academics, journalists, PAFSO members (active and retired), or freelance writers;
• liaising and collaborating with the Editor in Chief and the Deputy Editor in Chief in order to create lists of topics for potential articles;
• ensure a representative balance of sources in terms of language, backgrounds and demographic indicators;
• reviewing submissions and performing an initial proofreading to prepare articles for review by the Editor in Chief; and
• other related duties as required.

Dates of the contract
8 May to 25 August 2023.

Location and conditions
The position is based in Ottawa, Ontario, but work will be performed remotely, and the successful candidate is expected to provide their own workstation, computer and internet connection.

Hours of work
Full time, 37.5 hours per week. Flexible hours are possible, but the successful candidate must maintain core hours between 0900 and 1500 Ottawa time Monday through Friday.

Pay
Competitive with the Government of Canada student rates.

Qualifications
At least three years of undergraduate study in a relevant field such as journalism, history, literature or communications with a demonstrated interest in international affairs, geopolitics, and foreign policy.

Personal suitability
A self-starter with excellent editing skills and a strong and demonstrated interest in journalism, foreign policy, and international affairs. Excellent written communications skills in either English or French are essential, and bilingualism is an asset.

Eligibility
This position is open to Canadian citizens and Permanent Residents. Regular PAFSO members and the spouses or dependents of current Executive Committee members are not eligible.
