Our skilled and experienced team works together to bring eclectic, handmade, high-quality food to locals and tourists alike. It’s a fast-paced, fun, rewarding and challenging environment. You’ll never forget a summer with us in the town of McCarthy, located in the heart of Alaska’s Wrangell Mountains.

The Job

We’re hiring line cooks for summer 2021. Our head chefs have a combined 50 years of experience working in everything from Michelin-starred restaurants to contemporary casual. Whether you have little kitchen knowledge or you have a decade of cooking under your belt, we find a place for people that fit our work ethic, style, and character. 

Our season runs from mid-May to mid-September. Flexible start dates may be available.

The Location

The Potato is located in downtown McCarthy, Alaska. The quirky and fun former mining town is full of history, music, outdoor adventure, and community. This is an off-grid, remote location situated at the end of a 60-mile dirt road. It’s also the hub for visitors to Wrangell-St. Elias National Park, the country’s largest. The town sits at the foot of the Kennicott Glacier and is ringed by three mountain ranges. You’ll have opportunities to raft, flightsee, ice climb, glacier hike, and more.

Room, Board & Transportation

We have several housing options available within walking distance of the restaurant for a modest fee. Showers and laundry are provided. You’ll get one shift meal a day and a 50% discount on all food items. You can also purchase food through our weekly freight deliveries. You’ll be responsible for your flight to Anchorage, but we’ll get you to McCarthy from there.

Note on COVID-19

At The Potato, we take the pandemic seriously. We successfully operated last summer with a modified service plan. Our staff wears masks, and we require all customers to do so as well. Going into this season, we highly recommend any employees get the vaccine if it is available to them. We have a crew of 14-17, we all work closely together, and the safety and comfort of our staff and customers are of paramount importance to us.
