About us
Our vision is safe, effective and kind nursing and midwifery that improves everyone’s health and wellbeing. As the professional regulator of more than 725,000 nursing and midwifery professionals, we have an important role to play in making this a reality.
Our core role is to regulate. First, we promote high professional standards for nurses and midwives across the UK, and nursing associates in England. Second, we maintain the register of professionals eligible to practise. Third, we investigate when nursing or midwifery practice goes wrong – something that affects less than one percent of professionals each year.
To regulate well, we support our professions and the public. We create resources and guidance that are useful throughout people’s careers, helping them to deliver our standards in practice and address new challenges. We also support people involved in our investigations, and we’re increasing our visibility so people feel engaged and empowered to shape our work.
Regulating and supporting our professions allows us to influence health and social care. We share intelligence from our regulatory activities and work with our partners to support workforce planning and sector-wide decision making. We use our voice to speak up for a healthy and inclusive working environment for our professions.

About the role
Our Professional Practice Directorate is at the heart of shaping the nursing, midwifery and nursing associate professions.
As part of our regulatory function we set the standards that nurses, midwives and nursing associates have to meet, alongside setting the Code.
We take a proportionate approach to the regulation of post-registration qualifications. We reserve regulation for those areas where ensuring consistency of standards of proficiency, and standards for education and training, is needed to achieve a higher level of quality and safety in order to mitigate risk and to reassure the public.
One of the means we have of recognising post-registration qualifications is through setting standards of proficiency for specialist community public health nurses (SCPHN). The second way we do this is through setting standards for specialist practice qualifications (SPQs). Specialist practice qualifications are annotations to our register and indicate that a registered nurse has successfully undertaken an NMC approved SPQ programme that meets our standards in a particular area of practice.
We also approve over 90 education institutions, including 280 SCPHN programmes and 241 community nursing SPQ programmes. We approve these institutions and programmes against our standards, and then continue to monitor them to ensure our standards continue to be met.
This is a really exciting time to be joining the Directorate as we have recently published our new post registration SCPHN and community nursing SPQ standards and are now looking to actively support their implementation across the UK. As we look to the future, we will also be exploring regulating Advanced Practice, reviewing the Code and reviewing our approach to revalidation.
Working with the Assistant Director, Education and Standards and the nurse and midwife adviser team you will provide specialist professional advice to our ongoing work with stakeholders to support the implementation and subsequent evaluation of the new post-registration standards across the four countries of the UK.
You will have the opportunity to learn more about the regulatory function of the organisation and provide specialist advice when required.
This role will help drive forward the work of our directorate that will enable NMC SCPHN and community nursing SPQ professionals to provide safer, better care.
Within this role your area of practice for revalidation will include nursing regulation, standards, education, quality and policy.
If you’re an experienced professional with either a SCPHN and/or community nursing SPQ qualification who regularly supports and educates aspiring SCPHN and/or nurses undertaking community nursing SPQs then we’d love to hear from you.
About you
Ideally you will be an experienced registered nurse and/or midwife with a Specialist Community Public Health qualification, and/or a registered nurse with a community nursing specialist practice qualification with demonstrable experience of delivering and/or supporting professional post-registration education programmes in practice or theory settings to meet regulatory standards.
Experience of delivering high quality presentations and facilitating diverse stakeholder audiences is a must as are effective oral and written communication skills, including clear report writing skills. The ability to work independently with minimum supervision, be able to use initiative and meet challenging deadlines is key to the success of this role.
It will be a condition of employment that you maintain your NMC registration.
