Would you like to work in Parliament, advising a cross-party Committee of MPs on issues of national importance? We are looking for 2 Committee Specialists to provide impartial policy advice and support to two high-profile select committees. One to the Health and Social Care Select Committee, the other to the Education Select Committee. You should have existing experience of issues in health or social care, or education policy.
Our Team
In either role, you will be part of a small team who work collaboratively to support the Committee. Select Committees are cross-party committees of MPs who examine government policy and spending. You can find out what Select Committees are and what they do on the Parliament website.
The Role
You will be providing policy advice and support to the Chair and Members of the Committee, drafting briefing, liaising with stakeholders and drafting reports:
The Health and Social Care Committee considers the policies, expenditure and administration of the Department for Health and Social Care. The Committee is currently working on issues relating to the covid-19 pandemic, the health and social care workforce, the future of general practice, and body image.
The Education Committee looks at the work of the Department for Education. It is currently examining the Government’s catch-up programme, the future of post-16 qualifications, Children’s Homes, and the educational challenges facing children and young people from Gypsy, Roma and Traveller backgrounds. The role on the Education Committee is initially to cover an outward secondment and you may be asked to take on an equivalent role elsewhere in the Select Committee Team after a year.
You are not likely to have line management responsibilities, but there may be opportunities to develop line management skills by mentoring and supervising other team members.
Candidate Requirements
It is crucial for this role that you can act, and be seen to act, in a politically impartial way.
As well as experience in health or social care, or education policy; you will need to be able to research often unfamiliar topics rapidly and draw evidence-based conclusions. You will also need strong communications, organisational and team working skills. For information on this and the role, please review the job description.
Structured training programmes and on-the-job training will be offered to help you develop the knowledge you need to be successful in the role.
Like the House of Commons as a whole, SCT is committed to equality and diversity. We actively encourage applications from people from diverse backgrounds.
